What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

My x1 carbon gen 1 is my favorite BSD desktop. Everyone has his junk system where he just installs crap on it and doesn't maintain it. My openbsd installation is now 2 years old with OBSD 7.7 releasing any moment. It'll work for many more upgrades. My record was probably 5months uptime.

I need to be very clear, that the push towards "vibe coding" - that is, deliberately deskilling people - is because AI code assistants are an (increasingly expensive) subscription service.

If you know how to code, you can just write Python, C, Java, R, PHP, whatever for free and make things. You may not own the tools of production, but at least you're not renting them.

If you have been deskilled so you only know how to vibe code, you will be paying for that privilege forever.

This also goes, by the way, for researchers who are starting to be convinced they don't need to learn how to be scientists anymore, because "the AI" can just do the science for them. Nope.

Was stalking @TodePondLu wilson's profile and github.com/tldraw/tldraw is actually a really neat project.

Does one thing and does it well, all the while being open-source and easy to integrate.

I use both Obsidian and Inkscape a bit, and an open-source canvas tool is a nice in-between option.

1. Bluesky’s about interop and scale, mastos about topological distribution, blockchains are about censorship resistance. Decentralization means different things 2. All of our PDSes got DDOSed. Any PDS that wasn’t stayed online. If the same happened to AP, they would’ve had the same outage

I really don't want go away from .

It's my first Mastodon instance.
I've donated for some time to maintain it.
I honestly don't mind what people I don't follow post about. However, it kinda looks not ok to have a moderator that expresses opinions I'm not ok with. For a moderator on the other hand that doesn't sound good as moderators have powers to shape discussions and allow same opinions to strive on an instance.

Charming story of struggle and finding peace in If you like those old Linux vibes.
I myself once spent a week struggling with FVWM on . But OpenBSD, alas, has very old version in base, circa 2002 due to licensing reasons. So I couldn't do many things I wanted to do.
FVWM feels extremely strange and simply crazy when you delve into config files. But then configuration syntax starts to make sense and you feel you can do just about anything with it. I couldn't, though. =(

"But before you form another thought, you’re going to want to keep reading this five-hundred-word bumper sticker on my Tesla so you can fully understand why I am not a bad person.

First, you must know that I got this car before Elon went evil billionaire. I recognize that its being a 2023 Tesla Model S does complicate that message, but you must also know that the only thing I hate more than what he’s doing to the American people is me being perceived as the bad guy."

Humans independently edit Wikipedia for humans. They don’t have any Ads or cannot be bullied into removing content. Wikipedia is free from AI slop. No wonder tech bros with AI companies want to eliminate it so that their fake AI text generator can show or push propaganda. Please do not let Wikipedia die. It is an independent source and far more reliable than Gen AI companies. It is a real shame that it comes to this.

@cwebberChristine Lemmer-Webber its probably going to be a disruptive and costly procedure but such organizations should maybe consider the feasibility of relocating their formal structures (not necessarily all their people) into EU / ECJ jurisdiction (maybe Luxemburg?)

Nothing is guaranteed anywhere when society implodes, but the multilateral nature of EU law and politics means collapse must be universal and not just a single country. Its one of the nice safety features of a federated system ;-)

@openrisk @cwebberChristine Lemmer-Webber in theory the Wikimedia Foundation is federated: we have chapters and user groups all over the world, and Wikimedia Deutschland actually has a pretty substantial budget and funds some development itself.

But there is still a lot of centralization as well, mostly for efficiency and coordination, and it would/will be very hard to relocate.

Part of the original motivation for centralization was to collapse legal regimes, so that the project only had a single legal venue to dictate terms w/r/t copyright, libel, privacy etc. USA was seen at the time as a safe and stable bet.

Moving to (say) the EU would be an enormous legal undertaking, in addition to all the other costs.

I have been too busy with Xogot to devote attention to my library to embed Godot into your SwiftUI apps.

This past week, I worked to clean up the various branches, the CI and the packaging to fix this.

I have been promising this work for months, but I had been too busy on Xogot.

We now have a clean slate:
