So, a hypothetical situation for which I am soliciting feedback:

We are in some moderately populous city, for which there is - suddenly, unexpectedly - unreliable power and no network. Cellular, ISPs, those things stop. Power, it's maybe sporadic, DNS is gone.

There is some plausible critical mass of nerds who want to be useful, Lora mesh & let's go. We stand up a server.

What's on that server and why?

If you're building a JavaScript library and need logging, you would love LogTape hackers.pub/@hongminhee/2025/l

It's great folks are talking about internet resiliency, but resist the temptation to go build the cool fun mesh network first and then the services that run on it second. You need the services first. You're far more likely to see your country or area getting islanded than you are to see your ISP suddenly switched off, and you're better placed to rebuild IP networks from a single access point where you can access a wiki and send local email than you are building services on your empty mesh

I had the beginning of an idea for a talk last night. I've not gotten much beyond the title (in the image) and the general concept of "companies are using your code whether you want them to or not. here's how to navigate the reality of being in MegaCorp's supply chain" not to make developers embrace the idea, but to help ease the pains that come with it. Anyway, if this sounds mildly interesting to you, let me know.

Two panel meme. In the top panel, a dimly-lit pirate looks into the camera saying "you'd better start believing in supply chains". In the bottom panel, the pirate is a decaying corpse saying "you're in one."

(This is a scene from "The Pirates of the Caribbean")
