What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

A fresh take on monetizing : don't mess with the license, instead charge recurring dollars for a seat at the planning table. I like it, it will be interesting to see how it works out.

Of course it doesn't solve the issue of a giant (*cough* Amazon) taking your OSS code and running off with it.

Naturally this will only work if your product is used by businesses, and you *want* to cater to their needs. Because they are the ones with the cash, so you'll answer to them.

OK fedi hivemind... I'm looking for a flat square of material about 1cm on a side and maybe 1mm thick that is going to survive being boiled in hot nitric/sulfuric acid for a couple of minutes, then rinsed in acetone and water.

I'm thinking a glass or ceramic, but don't have a source for ready made chunks of the right size (microscope coverglasses are too fragile).

You can get pre-diced silicon wafers with chunks the right size (e.g. Ted Pella 16006) but that's annoyingly expensive. Anything more cost effective?

Also related... I need to mount a sample to this substrate with something that isn't going to disintegrate during this etching process lol. (good luck)

The hard part of is trying to simultaneously have hard to misuse APIs and no additional performance penalty (however small). If you relax either of those goals (is it really a problem if you call that method through a v-table? Is using interior mutability for that config flag going to affect anything?), then becomes much easier to write.

Hey, !

Along with a grad student, I am working on a paper the surveys Mastodon (and forks -- Hometown, Glitch) servers that have some connection to .

We have done a lot of digging and have found ~40 instances that have some connection to Canada. We presented our work recently:

robertwgehl.org/presentations/

But! Maybe we're missing some. If you are willing to share, please let me know if your Mastodon/fork instance meets this criteria.

Boosts appreciated!

“The world is now anticipated to heat up by 2.6C above preindustrial times by the end of the century – the same temperature rise forecast last year.

‘That all means the end of agriculture in the UK and across Europe, drought and monsoon failure in Asia and Africa, lethal heat and humidity’”

I guess we should build more data centres.

(Calvino, 2022, p. 274)

@Em0nM4stodonEm :official_verified: Microsoft is doing the Linux community a major favour. Their “Agentic” OS and the massive failure of Windows 11 with the community is making people quit in droves. Steam is there to capture the gamer base, we need to co-opt this movement to get people off Microsoft products.

I’ve been yapping about how Microsoft is probably one of the most complicit tech company on the BDS list, but that rarely resonates with people.

@Em0nM4stodonEm :official_verified: I hear a lot of talk about what the marginal environmental impact of a single genAI response is, whether you should include the amortised impact of model training and how big a difference that makes, but it seems to miss the point: every single query is a vote for "yes, please build more of this in the future" and you can't amortise that away
