I'm thinking about how it now seems clear this particular fascist moment will end, this particular movement will fall, but I'm thinking about all the forms of horrible harm that will be locked-in forever and go uncommented on. I am thinking about this because KOSA has been reintroduced in the House.

Sometimes surprises come when you least expect them. A few months ago, I helped an acquaintance install a router at his house. He is very happy with it; it does excellent load balancing and failover over 4G.
A little while ago, he sent me a message about how "Back to Home" helped him bypass the limited connection at the hotel he is currently in.

I hadn't tried it yet, so I did a couple of tests.

It's really practical and quick to set up. Well done, MikroTik! @mikrotik

Surprise features in Toot v26.0: The experimental features menu. Deep down in the settings menu, there is now an entry for experimental features. This is a place where I can put things that I have been working on but that I haven't had the opportunity to finish for one reason or another, or things that are somewhat useful but lack proper polish and maybe aren't worth the work.

Currently, this has some questionable things in it, and one actual major feature...

By default, Mastodon prevents you seeing a boosted post again until 40 other posts have flowed through your timeline. There is more info at:

➡️ fedi.tips/how-do-i-stop-seeing

The 40 number is hardcoded into the Mastodon server software and currently cannot be altered. It seems to have worked better in the days when Mastodon was much quieter.

If you're comfortable using Github, you can vote for this number to be adjustable at github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

Our kids' school has a sign up thingy for parents to volunteer to do something.
I like they aren't using form or spreadsheet for this, but I don't like that they're using a third party sign up platform that has lots of ads and even trying to upsell to sign up for some other events unrelated to the school.

It's free but at a cost of something else.

I imagine this problem is not unique to my kids' school. But how can we come up with a better school web infrastructure to support these things? 🙁

Unsure Calculator

Unsure Calculator

The Uncertainty Calculator enables users to perform calculations using precise numbers and ranges (e.g., 4 or 4 ± 6) to express uncertainty. It simplifies statistical reasoning for everyday decisions, helping users gauge potential financial outcomes in uncertain situations.

Key Features

  • Input both exact numbers and ranges with a tilde (~) to denote uncertainty.

  • Operates on basic mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and supports functions like exponentiation, square roots, and trigonometric functions.

  • Utilizes a Monte Carlo method for computations, providing a probabilistic range of results.

  • Design is basic and intentionally user-friendly, aiming to empower those without deep statistical knowledge.

Limitations

  • Calculation speed is slower due to Monte Carlo simulations, and the formula parser may show errors.

  • Only normal distributions are assumed for ranges, providing a simplified model for uncertainty.

Practical Applications

  • Estimate financial viability of business ideas, calculate potential investment returns, assess risks, and more, all accounting for uncertainty in key variables.

This sounds like a snark but I’m totally serious: I want to understand who’s buying multiple carts full of pies at Costco. Multiple people are checking out with 1, 2, even 3 carts filled to the brim with pie. Are they fencing them? Donating? Reselling by the slice at restaurants? Having Thanksgiving meals at a scale I can barely imagine? (I suppose I could have asked but that feels awkward)
