Disabling all updates on your device's OS is obviously not ideal from a security standpoint and will very likely mean you're vulnerable to malware and even simple exploits over time.
Perhaps more importantly for our #FOSS software ecosystem is that developers will eventually have to comply or face irrelevance. We can't be stuck on old versions of Android ROMs which get worse and more insecure over time as well as tied to legacy hardware...
@syseditFOSS Dev @fdroidorgF-Droid @yaleprivacylab Plus, we should expect that finding good, privacy-respecting software like apps that are currently in F-Droid but not Google Play will get more difficult over time.
And, of course, Google already chooses to block software that gives us more autonomy and control of our devices, so it's not just about privacy and security. Google could block apps for any reason it sees fit and will block availability of apps based upon rules in specific jurisdictions as well.

F-Droid is just one organization that is much more serious than #Google about checking the safety of their catalog of apps. Sometimes, the safest option is installing APKs directly from trusted developers.
@fdroidorgF-Droid @yaleprivacylab These methods can avoid ad trackers, #surveillance code, and unwanted data sharing. To cut off these options is to put many activists, journalists, whistleblowers, and ordinary users at risk.

Framing this change as protection does not reflect the reality of the #Android ecosystem. #Google Play has long allowed unsafe apps, invasive tracker SDKs, and supply chain threats that slip through automated review. Independent audits have consistently revealed these issues inside of Google Play, even *after* Google claims to have scrubbed.

My mother taught me how to embroider towels and pillowcases when I was seven or so. She kept me in supplies and expected no less than perfect stitching. Less than perfect was ripped out and redone.
She sold my work to fund missionary programs for the church. After I mastered embroidery I leveled up to crochet and tatting to add lace edges.
In the 1960's and 70's I earned my own extra money embellishing bell bottoms for friends.
I gave up this kind of delicate work for years and years.
Until I lost my son. I took up my needle again and sewed dozens and dozens of towels to focus on something in hand.
When Summer came to live with us she filled much of that emptiness and I put the sewing away again.
I am starting again to craft a few gifts. It is something I can give without having to shop.
This time it's just for fun.
