@b0rkJulia Evans Wrt to Makefile.am, most likely part of autotools, e.g. https://autotools.info/ if you are inclined to go down an autotools rabbithole (an example autotools explanation site, haven't used it). Personally, I've never had too much issue with my limited autotools usage, but I know autotools receives a lot of "critique" too.
