One of the beautiful things about living outside the city are the sounds of the countryside. When we first moved into this house, we chose the room that's coldest in winter, but has windows overlooking the open fields. During this season, at night, all you can hear are the crickets. It's absolutely wonderful. In the other bedroom? Just the hum of the neighbors' air conditioners. The choice is pretty obvious, wouldn't you say?

I've placed a security hold on Xlibre in Alpine, for a number of reasons that basically sum up to an unproven reactionary project whose code runs with elevated privilege (such as direct hardware access) is extremely high risk for introducing security-related regressions.
I do think a fork of X is a good idea, but that fork needs to be focused on sustainability: it should be focused on the generic drivers (such as modesetting for video and libinput for input), and there needs to be a real documented plan for maintenance and triage of security vulnerabilities.
Right now, I don't see that. Instead I see a fork of every component of X, including all of the hardware-specific drivers, and people complaining about politics.
This does not inspire confidence that the fork will not introduce security regressions, or worse, fail to import security patches from X.org.
For those reasons, at least for now, the security hold will remain indefinitely. We can reevaluate after the project has had time to mature (and hopefully start focusing on the fundamentals rather than wild proclamations about being "anti-DEI").
saw this and thought it was cool. 😄

We got this question about adding support for the NETRC environment variable to #curl - because it currently does not support it.
Curious about the prevalence of this environment variable in existing tools I decided to, yeah, Google it...

For software engineers, how many browser tabs do you typically have open while working?
The internet blackout in #Iran is ongoing and I am trying to find information about how its actually enacted. Hearing that local services are working. Would like to understand how exactly the blackout is enacted. Are they filtering IP blocks? Are all .ir domains still accessible? The media keeps talking about it like it's a big on off switch but that's obviously not the case

I will not give up hope of a ceasefire in Gaza and a return to full access to humanitarian aid.
Help Iranians stay connected!
The internet access has been heavily disrupted across the country. Please consider running a Tor Snowflake proxy - it's a quick and meaningful way to help Iranians stay online. #KeepItOn
Please note that the #snowflake browser addon seems more efficient in #iran.

@deltaDelta Chat I guess you are using a local mail provider, right? Not the default one from delta chat?
True, I set up a chatmail.at server on a VPS in Iran.
I have also provided my users with binary files of delta chat since the app markets like Google Play and F-Droid vanish too.
I'd like to thanks @deltaDelta Chat once again, not only for the apps' great user experience, the ability to self-host, and the amount of privacy my users now have on my servers, but also for their dedication to help people. I just asked them some questions in DMs and they have been very helpful.
Thanks team Delta ❤️

Since Dovecot 2.4 is dropping replication, I'll definitely need to rework my mail servers and those for BSDMail. I think I'll be going back to Cyrus, which I last used over 20 years ago. The problem is my memories have long faded, so it'll be like studying it again from scratch. And that makes me happy, because it'll be like learning something totally new!
Special thanks to @h3artbl33dh3artbl33d

I just had to do one of the things I hate most: remove someone from the BSD Cafe. Thankfully, it's happened very few times, but it's my job to maintain the tone that currently makes the BSD Cafe a serene and positive place for its users.
This isn't about censorship or ideology - the last two users I had to remove had radically opposing political views - it's solely about maintaining the atmosphere. And that doesn't mean I agree or disagree with the content posted, but rather with the general tone brought into the Cafe.
Now I'm turning off my computer, because I still feel a sense of sadness about what I had to do.
Right now that’s the only problem we are having and the reason we don’t start the house itself.
I also thank you all for the support on helping us get all the materials needed. Bless.
You all made it possible let keep it going as we still need help if you can contribute anything we are will kindly accept and we truly appreciate it a lot as every helps means a lot to us.
Once again thank you all.
More blessings!!!

Guys I have already pack the bricks 🧱 today for more space for other 20 bags which’s left to make bricks.
Next week we will complete making bricks 🧱. My donation is still going as we are looking forward to use and pay the contractor and his workers.
I still need help right now because it’s soon going to be rain and would be nice we starts before it rains.
🙏Please if you can’t support financially you can please boost our post!
All individual beings have a built-in expiration date. But this is not an intrinsic property of life. Species are "immortal"--they only expire under external pressure.
There is advantage in decomposing the immortal species into mortal individuals, just as there is advantage in decomposing individuals into cells.

What I'm listening to today: "More disturbing wave bard sounds", OSVoS
There's a new Bastl Kastle and one of its configurations is a tiny "modular"¹ sample scrambler. This artist did a number of pieces mixing the Kastle 2 with other gear, this one I thought had the most interesting beat (You might prefer "More Wave Bard Experimentation" if you like kalimbas more than I do). Alien Gregorian chants + hip hop

¹ Jump wires instead of patch cables…take a look, it's weird
What I'm listening to today: "Legendary Wings", Hyakutaro Tsukumo (arranged by Yuu)
This is a General MIDI arrangement of the main theme to Thunder Force V, a sidescrolling shooter made by Technosoft in 1997 for the Sega Saturn. For whatever reason, this is the version I got hooked on!
Rendered on (splitting channels) a Roland SC-8850 and Yamaha MU2000, both of which were released in 1999, so if TF.V had come out just two years later it could have sounded like this.
Ah, I see that today's weather is "sweat visibly and literally dripping off my elbows" #dlws
Fuck it. I’m starting WoW Classic again. I quit OSRS because Jagex management became shitty, so if feels a little hypocritical to now give Blizz money. But I need something to occupy my mind. I can’t be productive right now. I have no idea what I’m going to do about work this week. I’m tempted to call it off tbh.
Sometimes Claude just blows me away. I was trying to find a resizing issue in VibeTunnel for two hours. Finally decided to just give Claude playwright and find it itself. First it resized the window around and reproduced my problem. Then I also gave it the server logs, since we don't have them unified yet. With that information it immediately spotted the issue.
I'm still in awe about how incredibly cool all of this is.
