I recently read "short-term delivery is prioritized over long-term maintainability". In my head I translated to "cashflow is prioritized over optionality".

That's the decision from an investor perspective. We programmers experience it as "I have to wade through moist garbage forever & you don't care", but it's really a business decision. They're paying you money so they don't have to care.

That said, it's possible to get the business decision wrong, even fatally wrong, either direction. A balance that is maximizes the chance for survival when a product is new may lead to sclerosis when it is mature.

by now I do have a DeutschlandTicket, so distance does not really matter as much as long as there is a reliable connection from Frankfurt Hbf, I will have this ticket until March 28th.

With the donations that came in, I've bought myself some more clothes (primarily, a sweater to keep warm whilst the one I previously had can be washed as well as underwear), food and misc niceties, and now have enough left to pay for next month's DeutschlandTicket and a little extra (think 20-40€)

Horseshoe crabs (order Xiphosura, "sword-tail"), which date back at least 450 million years, are older than:

- crabs* (~200 million years ago)
- horses (~50 mya, tops)
- horseshoes (~1000 years ago, tops)
- swords (the _xiphos_ is Iron Age; ~1200 ya)

Not tails though.

* that's right, horseshoe crabs are not crabs. They are more closely related to arachnids and, according to some recent work, may even be more closely related to some arachnids than some arachnids are to each other, which you could think of as "horseshoe crabs are arachnids" but which really means "the group 'arachnids' isn't a true group and we need to make a new category." However, other work supports the traditional "family tree" with them solidly outside arachnids. At any rate, they are in the branch of arthropods called Chelicerata (also including arachnids and sea spiders) rather than Mandibulata (crustaceans, insects, etc.; all the other arthropods.)

This is a “GPO Modem 2B” - a #dialup #modem… phone line in, RS232 out at a whopping 300bps!

It’s all discrete components (no ICs here!) and beautifully built with all the diodes/resistors mounted on little plastic carriers.

The modulator, demodulator etc are on separate, pull-out cards

It’s a gorgeous chunk of engineering, that I’ll be carefully powering up over the next few weeks!
