What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Addressing confusion between `Create` and contained object

In section 6.2 of ActivityPub, there's this snippet:

A mismatch between addressing of the Create activity and its object is likely to lead to confusion. As such, a server SHOULD copy any recipients of the Create activity to its object upon initial distribution, and likewise with copying recipients from the object to the wrapping Create activity.

So as I understand it, a Create activity has addressing fields both on itself but also on its object, i.e. it has both the fields to, cc, bto, bcc but also the nested fields object.to, object.cc, object.bto and object.bcc. The snippet above suggest that these fields should be equal but this is not guaranteed. I suppose this also applies to other activities than Create.

Is there any guidance on what the behavior should be in the situation when the fields are not equal? I can think of a few possibilities:

  1. The addressing on the activity is used and the addressing on the object is ignored.
  2. The addressing on the object is used and the addressing on the activity is ignored.
  3. The addressing of the activity and object are combined, deduplicated and the resulting fields are used.

Option 3 is flexible but I'm worried it might introduce some weird edge cases, could be confusing and it also sounds more complicated to implement. My initial thought is that option 2 sounds most reasonable.

Any idea what approach some established implementations take, if they deal with this problem at all?

The Primer on addressing does not discuss this.

EDIT: A related question which probably has the same answer as the original question: What should happen if the actor of the Create is different than the attributedTo field of the object?

Auf und neben einem Holztablett stehen drei von Gäst*innen mitgebrachte Porzellanplatten. Darauf thronen verschiedene Törtchen und Teilchen. Auf der vorderen Platte liegen zwei klassische Brownies, zwei Schoko-Espresso-Shortbreads und vier Cheesecakes (zwei mit Vanille, die anderen mit Zitrone und Lemon Curd). Auf der hinteren Platte liegen zwei Stücke Caramel Shortbread, zwei Apfeltartelettes und zwei Stücke Banana Bread, eins davon mit einer Zimtfrischkasecrème dekoriert. Auf der Platte neben dem Tablett liegen eine Zimtschnecke mit Pekannüssen, ein Stück Apfel-Karamell-Törtchen mit Haferflocken-Zimt-Streuseln, zwei Cheesecakes mit Zitrone und ein Stück Schokotarte mit Earl-Grey-Tee.

Things people should know about me especially if they're new here. (I may not be someone you want to follow)

I'm a 60 year old woman, an anti-civ anarchist, a single mother, and I'm fucking pissed off.

1. I don't believe in forgiveness for forgiveness's sake. All that does is protect abusers.

2. I don't trust that followers of organized religions are capable of making rational decisions. And in the case of most Xtians, humane ones.

3. I think that peaceful protests are useless in and of themselves. The successful ones in the past were capitulations by the status quo with the least scary options when faced with more radical ones (i.e., Martin Luther King Jr./Malcolm X; Gandhi/Bhagat Singh & others). I am not a pacifist and I believe that all this worship of peaceful protest is part of why we're in the mess we're in.

4. All states are evil. Civilization itself is an insult to our humanity and the earth we came from. Fuck the police (yes, even your father/brother/uncle/aunt).

5. I believe capitalism needs to be destroyed as soon as possible before it destroys what little ecosystem we have left.

6. I believe humans are pretty stupid, full of hubris, and am not a human supremacist. I don't think human life is any more sacred than any other living being's.

7. I think prisons should be abolished and replaced with restorative justice but sex offenders and crimes against children are completely unforgiveable and the perpetrators irredeemable.

8. I literally wish harm to all bigots. There are far too many hateful people in the world, especially in government and the judiciary, and I'd be fine with them all dropping dead by any means necessary. I don't think wanting our planet to be rid of horrible people makes me as bad as them.

9. I think the only good fascist is a dead fascist and if someone punches a Nazi, they fucking deserved it.

10. I believe a better world is possible, but not probable at this point. We've gone beyond the point of no return. And yes, I'm angry about it.

There are probably more but I'm still waking up and this is good enough for now.

So if any of this disturbs you, don't follow me. My account is a pro-curmudgeon/anti-establishment space.

A (retired) mechanical engineer that got "lost" in electronics production. Selling SMD-production lines, soldering equipment, manufacturing services and pcb's. Started loving before the word customer relationship was invented ;-) and is still passionate about the way we treat customers (mostly we don't treat them very well and are somehow still able to make money)
