(Yes, I can think of a lot of snarky explanations, too ... but given how many people and events use this combo, I hope there are some reasonable explanations for it, too?)

Looks like Matrix is shutting down the IRC bridge to OFTC that we are currently using soon. We are considering whether to selfhost / possibly use an alternative public bridge instance / maaaybe it is not worth keeping a bridge around at all (meaning that we would move to matrix only)

One thing that has been funny about the Mahmoud Khalil arrest has been commentators talking about the Trump Administration's shrewdness in arresting a permanent resident first, to test the First Amendment impact of the policy.
They weren't shrewd; they just didn't give a fuck. Citizenship for ultranationalists is colour-coded; every brown person is subject to expulsion, no matter what their papers say. Mahmoud Khalil was picked because of his leadership role, not his PR status.
