What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

What Etsy did was break its own model to allow numerous "shops" selling the same factory made crap onto a site that was supposed to be only for artisans & hand-crafted items. Why? Greed. More "stuff," more clicks, they thought.

And many artisans and a lot of customers voted with their...keyboards, and went elsewhere.

BTW: One alternative is the Artisans Cooperative: artisans.coop/

Etsy has erased its pandemic-era gains, but eBay has held up better
Tariffs are threatening global supply chains, but homemade and pre-loved goods could be insulated from the e-commerce chaos.
Hyunsoo Rim, March 19, 2025

The 2020s have been rocky so far for two of the internet's original online marketplaces.

Etsy peaked at an all time high in January of 2022, up 557% from pre-pandemic levels. It has now pretty much erased all those gains.

Ebay peaked about the same time, up 122% compared to pre-pandemic. It is now still about 85% above those levels.

We'd like to introduce the project family—a set of related tools that make building applications more accessible:

Fedify :fedify:

Fedify (@fedifyFedify: ActivityPub server framework) is a library for building federated server applications powered by ActivityPub and other standards. It provides type-safe objects for Activity Vocabulary, WebFinger client/server, HTTP Signatures, and more—eliminating boilerplate code so you can focus on your application logic.

Hollo :hollo:

Hollo (@holloHollo :hollo:) is a single-user microblogging server powered by Fedify. While designed for individual users, it's fully federated through ActivityPub, allowing interaction with users across the fediverse. implements Mastodon-compatible APIs, making it compatible with most Mastodon clients without needing its own web interface.

Hollo also serves as our testing ground for bleeding-edge Fedify features before they're officially released.

BotKit :botkit:

BotKit (@botkitBotKit by Fedify :botkit:) is our newest family member—a framework specifically designed for creating ActivityPub bots. Unlike traditional Mastodon bots, creates standalone ActivityPub servers that aren't constrained by platform-specific limitations (like character counts).

BotKit's API is intentionally simple—you can create a complete bot in a single TypeScript file!

All three projects are open source and hosted under the @fedify-dev GitHub organization. While they serve different purposes, they share common goals: making ActivityPub development more accessible and expanding the fediverse ecosystem.

I've been playing with Cursor to generate code...

It's like all the other LLM code generation tools - except it's on Crack

It just does random shit.

It's scarily good in some ways - but it's utterly uncontrollable and I really dread the quality of software that is going to be produced by this.

Never forget, today's right wing was built on conspiracy theories and distrust in our government, media, and institutions.
That is literally a How To for building a Fascist movement.

Now we find ourselves in the difficult position that half of America can't even talk to the other half.

if white websites burn your eyes out but they didn't a few years ago, it might just be that you haven't noticed that screens have gotten way brighter the last several years and out of habit you turned your screen brightness up enough to overpower the sun

if you turn it down, it might look way too dim in the moment, but give your eyes a few minutes to adjust and it'll probably look perceptually the same again. People look at my screenshots and say "how can you stand light mode?!" but my laptop brightness is at like 40% and my iPad is often as low as 10%. Bonus: battery magically doubles in capacity

Gnome 48 also brings so many improvements to Gnome Mobile.
Scrolling is just as smooth as it's on Android.
OSK and Touch text selection are better now.
And the cameras have started working on
Overall, it's getting to where it is starting to feel like a real alternative 🤩️.

My dream of crawling away from the clutches of Big-Tech gets closer.

Re: last boost (on GNOME 48), here's the most exciting part for me:

> Orca screen reader on Wayland: Orca shortcuts now function correctly in GNOME with Wayland, including the use of the Caps Lock key as the Orca modifier key. This is a major step forward in making assistive technologies available with the default GNOME display manager.

This is based on a small part of the work I did on GNOME accessibility last year. Thanks to @tyryluLukáš Tyrychtr for doing the heavy lifting to get it into production.
