What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I have, much to my dismay, learned enough about stock trading to explain how to bet against Tesla as an individual, with your own money. Doing this can put downward pressure on Tesla’s stock price and hurt the company. (And if, like me, you’re betting that Tesla is grossly overvalued and will hit it hard, then this might actually make you money — but don’t count on that!)

I’ll share what I’ve learned in a thread here. I hope it helps others, and I hope people with actual expertise will correct me if I say anything wrong.

Renown is a weird thing. Someone can be a well-known youtuber with lots of subs and people will see them as a celebrity, but because you never watched them, to you they're just some person. Or if you knew someone before they gained notability, you're just chill with them while others are starstruck.

I'm reading a 1987 Japanese magazine named Hacker and it's adorable. Besides talking about all kinds of bootlegs and erogames, it's got how-to instructions for how to defeat copy protection on PC-88 games. Like, here's how you format a disk and then run this BASIC code to copy the WIZARDRY game disk.

It's on the archive. There's some nudity in it, so beware:

The cover to Hacker magazine. The drawn cover has a floppy-disk-head man crank-starting the car of another floppy-disk-head man.

There's something therapeutic about configuring a system to be just the way you want it to be. You feel in total control of your computer. Some software feel like if your boss sat you down at a previous employee's desk with piles of stuff on it and told you "You can use whatever you want here, but keep it organized in the exact same way".

Starting My DeGoogle Journey! 🚀

I’ve decided to move away from Big Tech and focus on privacy. I’m currently loving @ProtonMail, Proton VPN, and Proton Drive—their commitment to privacy is outstanding.

I’m also making a conscious effort to use more EU-based software to avoid reliance on Big Tech and US companies.

Anyone else on this journey? What EU-based tools are you using? 🔒

For those of you not paying attention (because Middle Eastern country, amirite?), Turkey followed the neoliberalism to fascism pipeline (in this case Islamofascism) almost a quarter of a century before the US (with Christofascism/technofascism… Christo-techno fascism?)

Lots to learn here and a glimpse into your future in the US unless you can do something about it. (Hint: appeasement and compliance do not work.)

Here’s a talk I gave at an event in Berlin eight years ago against Erdoğan’s representative and regime. I also haven’t been back to Turkey for eight years. This is not a coincidence.

(İmamoğlu’s people actually invited me to give a talk a few years ago and I asked them if they could guarantee my safety if I flew into Istanbul. Needless to say, the answer was no.)

The new View Transition API and scroll-driven animations are just wonderful. No JavaScript needed.

It's such a shame that Firefox is missing that feature, but anybody using a WebKit-based browser will have the smooth transitions between pages along with images moving into place between pages, and the scrolling animation when scrolling through Upscaler's website.
