What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

One subtle difference between the scientific approach to truth and non-scientific approaches is that the former places (or aims to place) a high value on *accuracy*, while the latter often places a high value instead on *inerrancy*. The two objectives, though superficially similar, are actually not the same, and in fact opposed to each other in some fundamental ways. ("The perfect is the enemy of the good".)

By valuing inerrancy, one seeks to claim authority through never making, or at least never admitting, an error or mistake. If there is a conflict between one's authoritative statements and external observations or events, there is thus the incentive to find a rationalization that retains the former at the expense of the latter. To quote from "The Simpsons": "Am I so out of touch? No, it is the children who are wrong".

Inerrancy is a binary concept - one is either inerrant, or one is not (and in the majority of situations, the latter is actually the case). In contrast, accuracy is a continuous concept - perfect accuracy is generally impossible outside of purely mathematical situations, and so the realistic objective is instead to achieve gradually higher, but still imperfect, levels of accuracy through better use of observations, models, and theory. This attitude is perhaps exemplified by George Box's well known dictum: "All models are wrong. Some are useful."

I wonder what the big difference between the immigrants that are to be feared and expelled, and the immigrants that are given full access to every government database and allowed to hang out in the oval office.

I wonder what it is... Total mystery, no one can really say for sure...

(That's Sarcasm, we know it's money and skin color...)

fediverse dev friends:

i have a custom activitypub server running locally on my machine. i want to test its activitypub implementation against a (local?) mastodon server *without* exposing anything to the public internet.

what's the simplest way to do this?

how do AP devs usually test this stuff without exposing works-in-progress to the public internet?

ty!

I'm a member of the Dublin Local Enterprise Office group for Women in Business and we do weekly Zoom meetings. Sometimes it's just a coffee meetup, sometimes it's a talk from a member who shares their expertise on a niche subject.

Today that expert was me! 🎉

My expert talk was a very condensed primer on FOSS and The Fediverse where I only uhm a million times. @mastodonie gets mentioned a bit 😉

For a limited time only you can watch it here!

There it is! Finally, a real solution for how to style all of the HTML form controls using your own custom CSS to change anything — building on an interoperable UA set of defaults. It only took 30 years!

First will be the chance to style the “in-page” controls (the part embedded in the webpage), plus the popover for <select> (the part that appears “over top of” the page). Later we’ll do popovers for more things — like the date picker, etc.

Read about it here: drafts.csswg.org/css-forms/

Went to comment on

mccue.dev/pages/3-11-25-life-a

which backs commenting using "Utterances" (similar to Disqus) which uses GitHub as an auth source. Alight, I'm fine with distributed identity verification. Let's investigate…so what permissions does it want?

• Verify my my GitHub identity👍

• Know what resources I can access? Kinda sus, but meh 🤨

• Act on my behalf?! aw no. nope. nopity-nope-nope-no. 🙅

Screengrab of GitHub conveying the permissions "utterances" requested, listing "Verify your GitHub Identity", "Know which resources you can access", and "Act on your behalf" with buttons for "Cancel" and "Authorize Utterances"

this FreeBSD rc.d issue with ntpd/svcj is actually pretty interesting and affects more than ntpd -- i think it's broken nfsd too, although i didn't test that. and it's not clear how to fix it.

the basic problem is that with svcj enabled, ${svc}_precmd is run in a different shell than ${svc}_start, which means environment changes from precmd aren't visible in the start function. since ntpd sets $command_args in precmd, this means it starts without any command-line args.

overriding ${svc}_start is not desirable because then you miss all the magic that rc.subr does in its default start method, including the svcj stuff.

running precmd in the svcj before start doesn't work either, because ntpd needs to load a kernel module in its precmd.

i think the only fix here is to split precmd into two things, perhaps one called 'setup’ that does what precmd does now, and ‘precmd' that runs before start in the svcj. then ntpd's 'setup' could load the kernel modules etc., and its 'precmd' could set the command line args.

unless anyone has a better idea?

maybe i was meant to be born in the late carboniferous period. to live among the giant lizards and millipedes. i wouldn't need glasses to read because there'd be nothing to read. i wouldn't need a CPAP machine because the atmosphere would be so oxygen rich. i would never have to see the grub rescue> prompt again
