2025 is over, it was an great experience!

I mostly worked on gobuild.nix, a next-generation builder for Go in nixpkgs. gobuild.nix removes vendoring for Go packages in nixpkgs, modeling the full dependency graph in Nix. Each module dependency will be its own derivation, including build cache on a module level.

During the sprint, I moved gobuild.nix from linking dependency source into a vendor directory to providing a local directory that can be used as GOPROXY. This is both more versatile and simple.

Together with @britterBenedikt Ritter (he/him) I started implementing a code generation tool that will help to package the large number of packages that will be part of the Go dependencies package set. The tool generates the Nix code for these packages, including the FOD hashes.

She doesn't like mice. She doesn't like touch screen. She can work with text, though, and she's fine with some light markup, because it's not much different than doing the same on paper: you make things bold, or slanted, or use larger letters, bullet points, etc.

Linking? Linking's even easier, because [[anchor][text]] is much more convenient than drawing a huge arrow, and work accross documents, too, while arrows are confined to a single page, usually.

Obligatory reference: A Linux Desktop for the family, by yours truly, October last year.

There's very little new my Mom will be learning. A couple of keybinds, and a tiny bit of Org markup. Everything else is just something I bend to her will.

My Mom isn't learning to use a new system. A new system learns to adapt to my Mom. And that's how computers should be.

I love and I love but I do not understand what the strategy is here:

blog.mozilla.ai/map-features-i

It reads like looking for problems to apply AI to for "thought leadership" — and some ten years late at that.

OpenStreetMap has many players using machine learning; from big players to open source pipelines and models. It's not a technical problem to solve.

What are you doing Mozilla? Have you talked to anyone in the OpenStreetMap community?

: El Salvador's Gulag Cryptopelago (new, spicier title)

's in the news a lot right now because the Trump administration shipped a few hundred people off to that country's incredibly dangerous new mega prison, .

What seems to have gone unnoticed in all the reporting, however, is Salvadoran dictator 's outsized role in the world of cryptocurrency and through that his direct connections to the Trump administration via Commerce Secretary and .

Retoots appreciated.

@binarydigitLiz ❤️‍🩹 shame so much of the messaging and advice assumes that people do.

Some bodies prefer to store the energy more than others, other bodies almost push it to the muscles.

We all know someone skinny as a rake who eats like a horse and is full of energy all the time - uncontrollable leg jiggles and such. It's totally unsurprising that the other end of the spectrum exists too, people who eat carefully and whose bodies like to pack away the energy.

@stefanoStefano Marinelli I respectfully disagree with you. Marketing is the process of introducing the product to the consumer and it's not limited to just for-profit businesses. Community OSes could benefit greatly from better outreach. Big budgets aren't required. I'm not denying the importance of elegant technical solutions and features but marketing does not contradict that. Four low-cost strategies:

1. Better storytelling and branding
2. Social media
3. Community advocacy
4. Better new user onboarding

Having lived around 15% of my life in Europe, it’d periodically wonder, “so who are the tech giants or significant contributions, past and present?”

Something something Acorn ARM, and Lara Croft?

MikroTik, SAF Tehnika, and Skype?

Siemens and um, SAP?

One ExPad told me that Europe, for better or for worse lacks the venture capitalist ecosystem of other countries and can’t… experiment in the same way. Which is not necessarily entirely bad given that one tech bubble/pets.com is plenty.

But. The current reëvaluation is awesome and overdue, regardless of its motivations!

While I figure out where I could get a s390x machine, I should get a aarch64 machine in the meantime. I want something that's powerful enough to run handful of VMs that are used for web hosting and the like. Anyone got any recommendations?
