What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Signal provides:

- Excellent protection against third party interception of communications (wiretapping).

- Limited protection against compromised (hacked) or lost devices

- No protection against certain common usage mistakes (accidentally including a reporter in your large group war planning chat).

MUA reminding me that my bankers haven't replied in 5 days and asking me if I want to "follow-up".

I mean, sure their delayed (lack of) reply and incompetence ends up becoming my problem, but it's never my experience that those with money and power like being reminded of how they are failing their customers and constituents.

I forget who wrote something along the lines of those with money and power would need to lose so much to even begin to get a sense of what those who are disenfranchised feel all the time; but I kind of doubt things will ever get that bad for them.

Elon Musk lost something like $100 billion in his net worth in the last month or two. Do you think he's feeling any less comfortable? I don't.

I can't imagine ever having a billion to lose, let alone $100 billion.

30 years of craigslist, or, how did that happen?

Okay, I'm not even sure when I sent out the first email, since I never had any idea that my little effort would go anywhere.

Seems like a good idea to do now, as I'm in my sunset years, focused on geriatric matters including moisturizer and prunes.

The (short) video here is my best take at early history, setting the record straight, since there's a lot of misinformation out there.

Please humor me and take a look!

We have been experiencing an attack for the past 2 days, which has been causing some 429 issues for some users. This is faking normal browser User-Agents, which is making it hard to block without also causing some captchas and rate limits for users. We're working to resolve it.

In slightly more retro repair news, I started troubleshooting another green screen . I got as far as seeing some messed up data lines on the oscilloscope. I suspected the RAM or the Agnus, pulled the Agnus, broke off one of the pins. Need to source a new 8371 now. Dang. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Amiga 500 revision 5 board on my workbench, connected to my monitor which shows a green screen.

trying to make a list of programs that create a pseudoterminal to do something cool, so far I have:

- asciinema (to record your session)
- unbuffer (to "trick" any application into think it's writing to a TTY)
- tmux/screen/sshd/tmate
- terminal "servers" that you can use to have a terminal in a web browser

what else? I know there's `script` but I've never actually been able to find a practical use for script that I understood

Wrote about my illness. 72.peteashton.com/the-state-of

This took me a couple of weeks to write and is partly in lieu of me being able to stay in touch with a number of friends and family. Chronic fatigue is a fucking arse, but I'm slowly learning how to manage it.

nuintari's rules of networking 0x5f:

Never start a hostname with anything other than an alphabetic character. There is a significant amount of software that cannot deal with labels starting with anything else.

-------Commentary-------
In the network I am unfucking, I have to document devices named 1foo and 2bar as onefoo and twobar, because the software I am using to generate graphs(graphviz) shits on nodes starting with a numeric.

I've noticed something that I think is worth pointing out: pretty much ALL of the pushback I have gotten on LinkedIn over the past few months over stories critical of this administration has come from men in IT. Many of whom no doubt idolize Musk, who in their minds can walk on water.

Conversely, the response almost universally I've seen from female non/male people in IT and security professionals on LinkedIn has been a great deal more appropriate, i.e. horror, disgust and revulsion for the way this administration is treating federal employees, veterans, the courts, judges, lawyers, journalists, and important, long-standing U.S. policy interests.

I guess what I'm saying is nobody should expect the men in IT to lead the resistance. So many of them are like this guy: angry, aggressive, and really excited about the good old US of A going back to the 80s. Like the 1880s.

A LinkedIn direct message from Stuart Grant, CISSP, CEH, Principal Information Security Architect at Itron Inc.

Dear Brian: You suck. Leave your damn politics out of it. This is not a political platform.

Me: Hey Stuart. I'm sorry the guy you voted for is a Fascist. You should really start paying attention instead of burying your head in the sand.

What is just breathtaking about the signal war plans story is that they *could* have done this for years with nobody knowing. It’s a real risk, one that could have of course resulted in adversaries intercepting the US’s secret information. But they can’t stop being *flagrant* incompetent fuckups for even a few seconds, making the worst mistake possible (including an editor of a major publication!) almost immediately. Truly they are a towering, living monument to dysfunction.

Now let's talk about what we can all do to help in this moment.

I for one want to be able to tell my kids what I did.

The options are vast and run the gamut from phone calls to political volunteering to protest.

Let's start with how we think about elected representatives.

Over at indivisible.org/resource/guide, look at Chapter 2: A Quick Primer on Constituent Power. It notes that reps pay a lot of attention to local press, tally phone calls, etc.

Is there a handy IM I can install on Android that doesn't need a unique phone number during setup?

I want to put an IM on the phone that my eldest sometimes is allowed to use, so they can leave me messages, I think they'd be amused by it. But the phone doesn't have its own SIM or number.

(We still very much have control over this phone - if messages are sent to or come from others, I will be able to see them etc.)

Wins of the Resistance is BACK!

Trump is not invincible.

The fight is difficult. Some battles we will lose. But - we can win, have already won, and will still win!

The key is realizing it. If we believe they are invincible, they will be. If we believe we can defeat them, we will.

Millions of people taking simple action will change the world.

I want to chronicle the wins that are happening and what we can do to make things better. Let's begin!
