What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

"If the claims are true, this is not just a massive data leak in size but also a blow to user privacy. Additionally, whether this was an inside job or not, users are left with more questions than answers: How much of their data has been โ€œtakenโ€? Whoโ€™s behind the leak? And why hasnโ€™t X said anything about it, even after ThinkingOne tried reaching out multiple times?"

React was frontend's introduction to Big Lies. The React team themselves were talking a book they didn't fully understand (else Pete Hunt would never have been able to get on stage and say "it works like game engine!" with a straight face), and were serially unwilling to tell the full story as they knew it.

So the implausible proposition that a system that *obviously* doubled up work and didn't defend against layout thrashing would somehow be "faster" was projected and uncritically accepted.

Twitter, , hit by massive data breach potentially impacting 2.8 billion users, inside job suspected - โ€œA data leak involving a whopping 2.87 billion Twitter (X) users has surfaced on the infamous Breach Forums. According to a post by a user named ThinkingOne, the leak is the result of a disgruntled X employee who allegedly stole the data during a period of mass layoffs. If true, this would be the largest social media data leak in history, but surprisingly, neither X nor the broader public appears to be aware of it.โ€

I know a lot of European companies are reconsidering their software infrastructure choices these days, if that infrastructure is based in the US.

It's super weird that we've ended in this situation, but here we are.

Especially here in Denmark, where we have to internalize the fact that the very top of the political elite in the US, including the president, is actively threatening to invade part of Danish territory.

I've worked with cloud infrastructure for 10+ years at this point. As a small act of resistance, I'd like to offer free guidance to companies wishing to move their infra away from the US, and talk about non-US alternatives.

Reach out if that is something you'd like to do: markus@maragu.dk

PS: I hope this insanity will be upended sooner rather than later, one way or another. So we can stop wasting time and energy on stupid stuff like this and start working together, globally, again.

Every once in a while I see reviews for elementary OS that are like, โ€œThis is not for beginners. I figured it out because Iโ€™m super smart, but a normal person would have a hard time rsyncing files to their NASโ€

Your idea of what normal people want to do with their computers is fucking wild dude

Linux workstation report: the desktop experience is about a decade behind the modern experience, which means everything works more less out of the box with a googling here and there and is pretty pleasant to use after some quality time with the the settings dialog.

This is a considerable step up from the out of the box experience with a Mac, which demands you sign into things right away and wants money for fairly basic software, and especially windows, which is an outright assault.

The reverse engineering efforts going into making 3rd party SSDs for Apple are pretty impressive, e.g.
iBoff RCC's 2TB SSD for the M4 Mac Mini:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3CYj37bxDE

(That video was posted 3 days ago and they've already sold out of their first $170 [as contrasted with the $800 Apple charges for 2TB of slower NANDs] run of upgrades but are hoping to get sufficient pre orders for the next run to go from a 6 layer PCB to an 8 layer PCB while keeping costs roughly the same. Apparently an 8TB SSD upgrade is in the works too.)

They've even gone so far as to produce a PCB mod for Apple Silicon laptops to re-introduce removable storage, which is something Apple should just be doing from the factory, because invariably others can and will make faster and more affordable storage than Apple offers.

smdh Tim Cook's Apple may be amazing financially, but their engineering is another matter entirely.

Do as little testing as reasonable.

Users will always find bugs. That doesn't mean you're doing testing wrong. Testing is risk reduction, not revenue generation. The real question: are your users complaining loudly or churning at a high rate? That's your signal.
