What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Hey fedi, so I have this cheap doohickey for using computers away from a desk. It's got a touch pad and keys and is absolutely the right solution for the problem

But it sucks. The keys start bad and if used too much stop registering reliably, the touch pad ain't great, and it keeps losing connection to the dongle despite it being like 8 feet away

Is there some kind of premium version of these that exists? So far I've only ever seen the terrible dirt cheap ones for sale anywhere

(If you don't mind plz boost for reach I am *desperate*)

EDIT: to be clear the handheld/gamepad-like form factor is what makes this work so a more traditionally keyboard shaped device with an additional trackpad isn't really a suitable replacement

A plastic doohickey that's flat but shaped kind of like a game controller. The bottom has a keyboard with the type of mushy rubber buttons you'd expect on a cheap TV remote. In the top is a touch pad flanked by media buttons on the left and arrow buttons on the right. There are also dedicated mouse left and right buttons next to the keyboard

The Korean fediverse community is proposing to establish April 11th as “Fediverse Day” (聯合宇宙(연합우주)의 날). Since this idea emerged today in conversations among Korean fediverse users, they've suggested making today's date the official celebration going forward.

We're sharing this initiative with the broader fediverse community and would love to know if you'd support and participate in an annual Fediverse Day!

Excited to share that @pbzweihander쯔방 :yuri: :yurigarden: :garden: has created fediday.org—a new website dedicated to Fediverse Day! The site celebrates April 11th as Federated Fediverse Day, which originated from conversations in the Korean fediverse community. Visit the site to learn about the background of this initiative and discover other important dates in the fediverse calendar. If you'd like to add a special date, you can contribute through the GitHub repository!

I've updated my "How to have a great first PyCon" blog post for 2025.

I linked to more blog posts from others on "how to PyCon", updated links to this year's PyCon website, added more updates around the implosion of Twitter, and updated some outdated references.

See you at ! 👋 🐍💖

Going to @pyconPyCon US? Consider arriving early and updating your registration to add a tutorial or two.

The tutorials are an opportunity to spend 3 hours diving into one specific topic in a hands-on way.

And this year the tutorials will not be recorded, so the only way to partake is in-person at . Pre-registration (with an additional fee for each) is required so update your ticket.

Hello, all! For various reasons (which I'm happy to elaborate on), I'm writing a blog post on conference sprints, and I'd like your help. I'm aiming this at everyone - folks who might want to attend, but aren't sure what they're getting into, folks who want to get more out of sprints, and folks who want to run their own sprint.

I'm looking for answers to the following.

  1. How would you describe development sprints?

  2. If you attend, what do you get out of sprints? What are your goals heading into them? How do you decide what what project to join or what to work on? How long do you usually stay? What about attending sprints has worked for you and what hasn't? What are some examples of positive experiences you've had, and what are some negative ones? Do you have any advice for a first-time participant?

  3. If you've hosted a sprint, how did it go? What went well and what didn't? What would you do the same or differently? What experience level were you aiming for? Do you have any advice for a first-time host?

Answer as little or as much as you'd like, and include anything beyond this you feel is relevant.

Feel free to reply here or email me if you would prefer (hello(at)kattni.com). Boosting is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for your time!

@stefanoStefano Marinelli Bash only? Nice. Interesting.

As I am on a bash-only journey myself, despite having sworn sometime earlier to not program anything but trivialities in bash, I wonder: what do you feel is your biggest pain point with bash.

Mine is: passing lists (arrays) and maps (associative arrays) around as values, which would include having them as values in lists and maps. We can only pass around their names.

kurashi-no-techo.co.jp/blog/in
