More software engineering leaders need to remember Parkinson’s law of triviality AKA bike shedding.

It's the tendency of humans to spend disport large amounts of time on things that do not matter.

Where does this show up in software engineering?

- code review
- sprint retrospective
- root cause analysis

How does it show up?

- formatting for PR titles
- rigid guidelines for user stories
- new runbooks for each outage ever experienced

We also get hot dry winds that damage the leaves. It's really sad. Luckily there's a wild relative of the tomatillo that live in the mountains nearby so, I'm hopeful I'll be able to get a harvest. 😁

I want to put my phone down so I’ll probably come back to this, but wrt pro business stuff, it’s more that it makes the argument that currently, private business is better at shipping than government *and that that is a bad thing we need to fix*, not that we should privatize everything. It argues

But, a possible way in which the book is maybe good, but not bad: you don’t need to convince the communist with a Bluesky account that we should be building a world where everyone has everything they need. You need to convince the people who are even more annoying: the libs.
