아침에 학교에서 배가 침몰했는데 전원 구조됐다는 이야기를 들었다. 대수롭지 않게 생각하고 오후에 하교할 때까지도 전혀 신경을 쓰지 않았다. 그런데 집 앞에서 웬 할아버지가 나를 붙잡고서는 어떻게 그렇게 큰 배가 침몰할 수 있냐고, 어떻게 그 어린 학생들한테 이런 일이 일어날 수 있냐고 울먹였다. 전원 구조 소식을 아직 못 들으셨나 생각하면서 집에 들어와 TV를 켰다. 모든 채널에서 뉴스 특보를 하고 있었다. 그대로 거실 바닥에 앉아서 밤새 뉴스를 봤다.
