What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Humans independently edit Wikipedia for humans. They don’t have any Ads or cannot be bullied into removing content. Wikipedia is free from AI slop. No wonder tech bros with AI companies want to eliminate it so that their fake AI text generator can show or push propaganda. Please do not let Wikipedia die. It is an independent source and far more reliable than Gen AI companies. It is a real shame that it comes to this.

I know I'm old man yelling at clouds, but I miss not only physical buttons on devices, but multiple physical buttons.

I'm really getting tired of the current trend seen on headphones. Hold for 5 seconds to turn on, hold 5 seconds to turn off. Tap once for volume up. Double tap for next song, triple tap to turn on noise canceling. Hold the button down for 20 seconds while patting your head and doing interpretive dance in order to pair Bluetooth.

Give me an on/off switch. Give me an analog volume wheel. Give me dedicated buttons for functions

It's like a generation of designers grew up with one button Apple mice, and forgot how much more simple doing actual work with dedicated buttons actually is

mstdn.jpね、まず管理者が日常的にサーバに住んでいないので、異変に気付かないっていうのがあるんよ。モデレーターも含めて、誰も住んでない。

同じ大規模サーバでも、mastodon.socialやmisskey.ioは管理者のメインサーバだし、住み込みだからね。

Beloved programming community: many of you are hearing about the US DoJ threatening Wikipedia.

Some of you are thinking of ways to thwart this. Download the Wikipedia dumps, put it on IPFS or hand-couriered USB drives or other less-censorable systems.

A good impulse, but missing the point.

Wikipedia is not just a big document or a software artifact.

Its true value is that it is effortlessly available to a wide audience, can be updated rapidly, with no preconditions to view or edit.

I’m speaking at North Bay Python this afternoon. Current status: Hello panic, my old friend. I don’t speak regularly, but I do at least once or twice a year at this point, and it’s still not getting any easier. I think I’m more ready for this talk than I ever have been. But because I’m so used to everything around talks being a last minute scramble, my brain is insisting I should be super stressed out finishing my talk. Still looking forward to it!

Moving snac to home server was really easy. Can't imagine moving a mastodon instance this way.

Used tar on data folder — as recommended to preserve hardlinks —. Wormhole'd the data to my host, untar'ed and started it again.

All I had to do was setup autossh tunnel so that port 8001 in my LXC container pointed to some other port on the existing nginx frontend about 8000km away in Beauharnois 🇨🇦. It seems suprisingly reliable so far.

iTerm shows on the top left the OVH 2-core cheap instance as front end (canada), three other panes show logs, htop and bmon on container runing snac

A lot of modern shoes consist of a hollow matrix with thin cardboard insoles on top. When that insole fails, despite the sole and upper still being perfectly usable, the shoes are unwearable.
I cut a thin piece of plastic from a food container and insert it under the insole. The shoes last a lot longer and are more comfortable.
