これは今しか体験できないので説明しておきますが、
mstdn.jpの画像が表示されない件、ぼんやりしたボカシ画像のような表示だけが表示されており、なんとなく元の画像の色と形が想像できるようになっているハズです。（Webの場合。クライアントアプリは未対応の場合あり）
これは、BlurHashと呼ばれる技術によるもので、画像を読み込み中に表示したり、閲覧注意や画像がエラー等で表示できない場合に代わりに表示するプレースホルダー用途で使うものです。
BlurHashは、あらかじめサーバ側で画像を元に計算しておいて、ActivityPubでリモートサーバに配送したり、ブラウザやクライアントアントアプリに投稿データを渡す時に、添付画像のURLなどと一緒に伝えています。

という短い文字列がBlurHashで、これをボカシ画像に変換して表示しています。画像のURLより短いという。なかなか凄い技術です。
