New instance, new introduction!

I am curious about many things, and wish I had the time to practice everything, but some of the activities that have consistently been bringing joy to me are: baking bread and pastries, long-distance hiking, programming, folding paper, juggling, learning things, and listening to people talking about their passions!

For a living, I work in academia, currently as a post-doctoral researcher at Inria. I am using mathematical modeling, Bayesian statistics and scientific computing to solve biological problems usually involving bacteria.

I wish I could not care about politics, but I feel compelled to act and express my opinions by the state of the world. I am deeply appalled and terrified about the ongoing environmental and social emergencies. I am still trying to figure out how to best act in order to be the most helpful on these fronts.

I strongly believe in the Commons: public services, open access and open source, and I am involved in the development of several scientific open source packages, hoping that this is an effective way to use my skills and energy to help improve the world.

I have been on Mastodon for a couple of years now and I really like it here, thank you for having me 😊 ❤️

Early bits of #decentralization of #Badges look how, I created one in one instance (verifiedby.maho.dev) for @lqdev and it got decentralized/federated to other instance (badges.vocalcat.com)

So, badges are coming to the #fediverse.

In a technical note, I am using notes (so it gets published to mastodon), but adding the badge as "attachment" which is in the #activitypub spec. Tried document type before, but it does not render in Mastodon. I am going to work in supporting openbadges as activitypub attachments as well, so you can bring your existing openbadges to the fediverse.

@hugh@ausglam.space it's because clients can't make any assumptions about ActivityPub data using the C2S model. They have to perform full client side parsing and linking, then figure out some way to display this graph structure of data they've been given. The fact of the matter is that ActivityPubs design is overly broad, and no client could account for this. So, instances implement an API offering a simple, watered down format, plus the benefit of having stability even if the software moves to another federation protocol down the line.

There's also the matter that almost all ActivityPub implementations do not store posts in their database as JSON-LD, instead they unmarshal the data from it and store it in a concise format. Reconstructing it for the purposes of C2S would be inefficient and clunky.
