Pope Leo XIV is Peruvian, he was a Peruvian bishop, and was in Rome as a Peruvian Cardinal. He is a Peruvian Pope.

He has a US passport as well as a Peruvian one, but to call him American without reference to his chosen nationality and long life in Peru is to make an inaccurate political statement.
