Accessibility on Linux sucks, but GNOME and KDE are making progress

Accessibility in the software world is a problem in general, but it's an even bigger problem on open source desktops, as painfully highlighted by this excellent article detailing the utterly broken state of accessibility on Linux. Reading the article is soul-crushing as it starts to dawn on

SUPERHOT VR had its whole story patched out. I thought about it slightly too long and fell into rabbit hole. It doesn't make sense, it's bad that it happened, and it prompts a whole bunch of naval-gazing about Art. blog.giovanh.com/blog/2025/05/

You don't trust anyone else—not billionaire-run social networks, not instances managed by strangers with moderation policies that might separate you from your friends and favorite accounts.

So you've decided it's time to create your own instance, whether for yourself, your family, or a small community.

But you're unsure how to do it! You're not tech-savvy, and you're worried it won't work, that you'll fail, or that you won't be able to secure your new instance properly.

Fortunately, some companies now offer to set up an instance for you and handle all the technical aspects: installation, system updates, security, and more. All you need to do is manage it and enjoy it.

:friendica: :mastodon: :pixelfed: :funkwhale: :lemmy: :hubzilla: :peertube:

At least, that's the promise. 🙂

The website joinfediverse.wiki/Hosting_an_ lists some companies currently offering this service. It also provides a guide to help you choose the best host for your needs and outlines the questions you should consider.

From there, it's up to you to research the prices and terms of the companies you're interested in.

Has anyone here used the services from any of these companies? Is it really easy for non-technical people to install and manage an instance?

It's important that folks on the Fediverse periodically press the "Show More" button that appears on many of the posts. This allows the network to show more posts.

Be careful not to hit "show less" too many times. This causes messages to be unfederated.

Some little progress on my adventure RPG. This one shows that triggers can print stuff on the console, as well as uncover part of the map (e.g. when interacting with the statues).

This clip was recorded from Dosbox Staging, but I also tested it on an 8086 8Mhz with 512Kb of RAM (via 86Box) and basically works at the same speed.

Is there a "firehose" of posts? would you just look at all the servers' live feeds? I'm considering attempting to train an algorithm to classify
* personal status (ate a sandwich)
* hashtag participation
* branding and promotion
* conversational
* memetics (cats/rats/moss)
* identity assertion
* etc
This is awkward because I feel a bit embarrassed that I don't already know how to do this.

(btw, would be a final academic project for a machine learning course)

If any Mastodon instances are having trouble with their costs growing out of control, ping me and see if I can help lower your bill.

Apparently a recently closed instance was paying $300/month for hosting which is insane to read considering how small of an instance it was. When we had 40k monthly users I was paying about $120/month so an instance with less than 400 total users (not MAU) should be super cheap to run even with a few TB of storage and bandwidth.

It hurts my heart to read instances closing down over costs and finding out they’re paying more than instances 10x their size. 😢

I used to work an IT job in downtown Toronto. In the basement of our hip office building there exists an antiquarian book store. One day, I was frustrated at computers so went down there. The man at the store welcomed me, and allowed me as much time as I needed to browse the books. That store is my refuge and I'm convinced that the books there would long outlive the companies that I worked for. My profile photo is a picture of him at the till.
