What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

@glyph
(And I realise it's a bit gauche to ask people to donate when we are clearly not doing as much as is necessary -- it might feel a bit like a "reward" -- but we're resource-constrained as an organisation: every dollar has somewhere obvious it can go to grow our community and be more inclusive. It'd be a great place to be if we had the money. Right now we can't commit, because we don't know if we can afford those things.)

@michael i had to adjust a few things to get it to work with Github Pages setup. if you want to keep your local deploy of FediAlgo going hopefully there's no issues. Thanks for setting it up and lighting a fire under my ass to actually get it setup!

if you assume that the majority of professional programmers are paid to work on software that is either of no value or actively harmful (cf https://mastodon.functional.computer/@samir/112644372377281999 ) does that imply that working on open source software tools that make it easier for programmers to do their job has a net-negative moral value?

If you ever wondered why I rage against clouds and push towards selfhosting and a more sovereign Europe, here you go: Microsoft has kicked the ICC out of their e-mail platform.

It was ordered by Tangerine Mussolini - but Microsoft might be even more at blame here with their Ireland spin-off bullshit and hoax. As many suspected, it was a bold lie.

Today's real champion is this one. One of my PC Engines APU devices - I don’t remember the exact year I bought it, probably 2017.

It worked at my home as a router/firewall with OPNsense for several months, then in 2018 I installed it at a client’s site, "as a temporary emergency solution". Still running OPNsense, always kept updated, and it hasn’t missed a bit since then.

During a severe thunderstorm, the access point and switch connected to it were fried, but it kept going - silently and reliably. Zerotier, Wireguard, port forwarding, bandwidth graphs - all handled in a hot office, often with the air conditioning turned off during holidays.

It did everything, and it still works.

The client moved to a new location this morning, and the APU was replaced with a more powerful device (in anticipation of a future Internet upgrade). I decided to take it back with me (technically, it’s still mine) - they couldn’t find the power adapter, probably still packed in boxes, but up until 07:30 this morning (the last time I connected to the server behind it via VPN), it was perfectly reliable.

I’ll probably keep using it - I have others - maybe in the office as a file server with two attached drives.

Honor to the device, honor to OPNsense, honor to FreeBSD.

A PC Engines APU embedded system board housed in a red metal enclosure, sitting on a wooden table. The back panel displays three Gigabit Ethernet ports, two USB 3.0 ports, a DB9 serial console port, and a power input jack.

@stefanoStefano Marinelli APU Boards are EoL, aren‘t they? I love them, too - have still >30 running. (And some older Alix with 32bit FreeBSD)
The newest OPNsense installer stops showing the output via serial console (non UEFI issue), but at the end you‘ll hear the startup beep and everything is fine. Maybe an update helps
pcengines.github.io/
I‘ll try in 2 or 3 weeks. Cheers

On March 11, 889, a 22-year-old Japanese emperor wrote in his diary about his new black cat.

This diary entry is a rare and poetic historical artifact: a firsthand account of a beloved black cat written by Emperor Uda (宇多天皇) of Japan in 889 CE, when he was just 22 years old. It's considered one of the earliest known descriptions of a domestic cat in Japanese history, particularly in such a vivid, personal way.

See image Alt-Text for that diary entry.

On March 11, 889, a 22-year-old Japanese emperor wrote in his diary about his new black cat.
“On the 6th Day of the 2nd Month of the First Year of the Kampo era. Taking a moment of my free time, I wish to express my joy of the cat. It arrived by boat as a gift to the late Emperor, received from the hands of Minamoto no Kuwashi.
The color of the fur is peerless. None could find the words to describe it, although one said it was reminiscent of the deepest ink. It has an air about it, similar to Kanno. Its length is 5 sun, and its height is 6 sun. I affixed a bow about its neck, but it did not remain for long.
In rebellion, it narrows its eyes and extends its needles. It shows its back.
When it lies down, it curls in a circle like a coin. You cannot see its feet. It’s as if it were circular Bi disk. When it stands, its cry expresses profound loneliness, like a black dragon floating above the clouds.
By nature, it likes to stalk birds. It lowers its head and works its tail. It can extend its spine to raise its height by at least 2 sun. Its color allows it to disappear at night.
I am convinced it is superior to all other cats.”

1. Far right federal judge Matthew Kacsmaryk has just vacated all EEOC protections for gay and trans people in the work place. He says protections from "being fired" do not mean they are protected from harassment by Title VII. I cover this insane ruling here. Subscribe to support my journalism.
