What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I'd really love it if visual studio had a thing where when a build finishes it ducks my music for a moment and plays a sound effect. Ideally a loud popping sound if the build failed, and some kind of victory fanfare if the build was successful.

I'm sure it would not be hard to hack something together, but I really don't think I can justify spending work time on such a thing XD

my toxic trait is that i genuinely believe that whenever software sucks, it's because someone made some bad decisions, and as a corollary, if i were to write my own alternative software, it wouldn't suck, because i wouldn't have made such bad decisions.

and as a consequence i want to rewrite all software.

Today I just want to express my appreciation to Python conference organizers I've ever been to in the last 10 years. All of them have been super well organized that I keep coming back year after year.

At my son's chess competition now (500+ players). At the opening ceremony, and already it's a little more stressful lolsob

Last minute badge pickup instructions, last minute venue update, verbal communications, important urls are being shared in handwritten papers instead of qrcode or printouts 🥹

Little things like printing signages ahead of time, printing out wifi information etc, are simple things but takes time to plan and organize and thought out. Also, they cost money. So thanks also to any companies who have ever sponsored a Python community conference. Well-run event costs money, not just sweat and free time from community organizers.

So here we are in beta 3 and .cornerConfiguration is missing in action.

I'm OK with that - I'm sure there are a lot of complicating factors behind the scenes.

What I'm not OK with is making it impossible to test our changes for Liquid Glass. The effectView.layer.cornerRadius workaround is broken now and things look like shit:

At my $dayjob, we've lost a (small, tiny even) customer today. They've had their mail hosted with us and they've moved away because they couldn't find a nail client that was a fit with their needs. Apparently Proton is a match, for them.

I spent literally hours trying to make layout-parser.readthedocs.io/e work in virtualenv so that I can OCR text from newspaper article scans

Eventually, I got it to work (with lots of pinning) and thought: this will be a pain to productionize for my server! …but ultimately I realized all packages I needed were actually already packaged in nixpkgs! 😅

Now with a flake.nix like gist.github.com/stapelberg/45b, I have a reproducible (stable!) way of running this program 🥳

US politics, Trump, fascism

So, I don't really talk about politics on here! That's not why you're here, and there are hundreds of other folks to follow. But today I can't help myself. Today, there's too much to think about, too much to chew on, too much wrong to just remain silent.

Today, I was talking to my hair stylist - idle chatter to fill time - and I mentioned I was reading the news. She asked me if anything was happening, and what she should know.

I downplayed it. How could I not?
