What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

There’s two general ways of trying to get all the replies in a conversation tree: crawling up and down the reply tree, and Conversational Contexts. The first is pretty good, the second is a more comprehensive approach where the metadata of the conversation accounts for responses. You can use both together.

I am having a very funny experience right now where I want to run a program on my Synology NAS. "Everybody knows" that Rust's packaging situation is "good" and Python's packaging situation is "bad" but I can run whatever Python code I want because the Python community has actually invested in packaging tooling and prebuilt artifacts but Rust insists on compiling everything all the time and thus the only message I get from `cargo install` for anything non-trivial is "error: linker `cc` not found"

I'm building something which could uncharitably be described as "an open proxy providing attack amplification as a service", but which I'd rather describe as "a core part of tools like RSS feed readers": ask it to monitor a URL, and it'll check periodically to see if it has changed and tell you so. I'd like to make it a publicly available service so people can more easily build new tools for noticing when web pages change. What are some ways I can encourage good applications and discourage abuse?
