The stereotype for this kind of self-narrowing is math/tech people avoiding humanities. That certainly happens, but I see it at least as often in the other direction: people avoiding anything that smells like STEM, telling themselves they can’t, building a whole identity around it. It comes out as this weird kind of shame/pride mix — “I’m not a math person” etc — which tends to hide some kind of earlier trauma: bad teacher, bad curriculum, gender role policing, who knows.

Three countries in one day: Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Austria. I had a really nice company for a couple of hours on my bicycle trip along the river Rhine. A gang of 4 bromptonauts from the the Origami Club shared my tour. They were on a tour from Chur, Switzerland, back towards Zurich. One of them was Axel (@xtaranAxel ⌨🐧🐪🚴😷 | R.I.P Natenom). What a fabulous meeting! Thank you, guys, you made my day.

Health has a group of 8500 volunteers (I am one!) that help track Covid-19.

Every Monday they send me an email question: Did you develop a cough this week? Did you develop a fever? You simply click Yes or No. And hit reply. That’s it!

This citizen-science group info is matched with wastewater & hospital stats to track waves of viruses. Crucial for alerts and pandemic preparedness.

And they just announced they want to expand to 26,000 Canadian participants:
