この話は、下母澤寛『味覚極楽』という、昭和初年のさまざまな人びとの食にまつわる話を書き留めたとても面白い本のなかでも、とりわけ印象的なエピソードです。さすが大物革命家、カレーひとつ作るにしても気合が違うのでした。

Up from the Earth: Gigantic Jet Lightning
What's that rising up from the Earth? When circling the Earth on the International Space Station early in July, astronaut Nicole Ayers saw an unusual type of lightning rising up from the Earth: a gigantic jet. The powerful jet appears near the center of the featured image in red, white, and blue.

The Great Lacerta Nebula
It is one of the largest nebulas on the sky -- why isn't it better known? Roughly the same angular size as the Andromeda Galaxy, the Great Lacerta Nebula can be found toward the constellation of the Lizard (Lacerta).

A sequence documents the eruption of a massive solar prominence, originating as a small protrusion from the sun’s surface that expanded into an enormous plasma structure before dissipating into the void. Using 11 images taken about 12 minutes apart, the photographer in Fujian, China, documented this entire celestial event – as if the sun had let out a cosmic yawn.

This image taken in Wiltshire in the UK shows the International Space Station making a close pass of the moon. The event was predicted to be a transit but ended up being a close flyby. However, the result is still dramatic, with the station’s solar arrays backlit by the rising sun.
Meet Bock’s pygmy octopus (Octopus bocki). Growing up to 0.98 in (2.5 cm) long, excluding tentacles, this tiny species can be found near coral reefs in parts of the Central Pacific. It is primarily active at night, using camouflage to avoid predators. But when threatened, it can also release a cloud of ink to distract foes as the octopus makes an escape.

Ground pangolin (Smutsia temminckii)
This armored mammal spends most of its time on the floor of its habitat, creating burrows beneath the surface to snooze in during the day. Under the cover of darkness, it emerges to forage for insects like ants and termites. It uses its long tongue to slurp up prey whole. When threatened, it can roll up into a ball, protecting its soft body from predators.
On this day in 1936, the last known thylacine (Thylacinus cynocephalus) died at the Hobart Zoo in Tasmania. The animal’s passing marked the extinction of its species. Also known as the “Tasmanian wolf,” the thylacine was Australia’s largest marsupial predator. It sported a dog-like form, with distinctive stripes, and a jaw that could open up to 80 degrees—one of the largest gapes of any mammal.
