What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

@b0rkJulia Evans I have never setup pushremote, but I have had two remotes with the same branch. It's somewhat rare, but for me it occurs when I have a software projects that depend on an upstream dependency, but I need to maintain local modifications to that dependency. In those cases my dev repo has the upstream remote and tracks a main branch or sometimes a release/stable branch, but also keeps a remote of my "vendor" repo with both the upstream branch and my modification maintenance branch.

@b0rkJulia Evans: I use this to manage forks, and so have some small insight. Imagine a piece of software like dwm, a window manager with a small initial featureset that is extended via patches. Any meaningful user maintains their own fork, even if that "fork" only adds a config.h to set configuration values, as this project has no config file.

So I use pushremote to pull and rebase my patch set onto upstream master/main and push to my personal master/main. Does that clarify why this would be useful more than what you already have?

@janlJan Lehnardt :couchdb: it’s especially bad right now because they’re whipping up the flag as a symbol more than ever.

Growing up in the 80s the flag was a big sign of the National Front (neonazis). Their line was “there ain’t no black in the Union Jack”

The Proms is the only time it’s cool to wave the union flag.

One good thing I'm seeing this week: a segment of Bluesky user base is learning about the importance of having more than one server.

Moderation of massive flagship servers – ie the first server, used to ease adoption and breathe life into an open protocol – is inevitably fraught. It can and should improve, but those are bandaids.

This applies to ATProto, ActivityPub, Matrix, and beyond.

The structural solution is having more community-owned and -operated servers.

Comets hurtling through space? No. It's glacial ice and swirling sea foam on a black sand beach. One photo shows a wave receding, the other a wave crashing in. I don’t think I’ve ever had as much pure fun taking photographs as I had standing in the North Atlantic surf at sunrise, planting my tripod in the wet black sand of Fellsfjara, the Diamond Beach, over and over again. #photography #Iceland #monochrome #ColdFeet
Vortices of white sea foam swirl off the pointed corners of a chunk of clear glacial ice and recede across the black sand.A rush of incoming white sea foam swirls against and around a chunk of clear glacial ice that sits on soon-to-be-inundated black sand.
