“The big problem is YouTube. With YouTube, Google has a centralized chokehold on video. We need a way that’s as easy and scalable to host video content, independently, as it is for written content. I don’t know what the answer to that is, technically, but we ought to start working on it with urgency.”

PeerTube, but I chuckle while saying it. Mastodon got lucky with the Twitter implosion… YouTube isn’t likely to end up in a similar boat in the near term.

Asking the cycling hive mind: does anyone have recommendations for bicycle helmet lights for visibility both front and rear? I need velcro or other non-permanent mounts, and for the mounts (with the light(s) off) to be low profile enough that I can get a helmet cover over them, and I don't want heavy stuff. I'm happy with one light, two lights, or two connected lights.

(Men's helmets with built in lights are unlikely to work for me, I have very picky tastes in helmets.)

Whenever I need to run a throwaway script, I always use the filename "deleteme.py" (or more often, "delme.py"). Sometimes I add suffixes: "delme3.py" or "delme_gui_test.py". That way I know in the future I can delete these with no worries. Same for folder names. Anyone else have similar habits?

still really impressed about the discovery that the japanese water beetle can survive getting eaten by frogs because it combines its natural tendencies with just straight up walking through the entire digestive system at a brisk jog.

like they just fucking say no thank you and leave. this feels like one of the most insanely powerful adaptations i can imagine a creature having. like nah i can't do anything to stop the voracious predator of my biome from consuming me. Doesn't Mean I Give Up

We ( @nicksloan and I) just released Hummingbird Macrorouting v0.2.3 with a 6.2 concurrency fix.

Also paves the way for a small API change coming up in v0.3.0.

(Yes, this is only potentially interesting to like 3 of you, max (-; )

Peter Shamshiri said something on the most recent IBCK that perfectly captures an intense frustration I have had with reactionary centrist / shitlib discourse:

Talking about right-wing hypocrisy is fundamentally misunderstanding what is happening. If a mugger asks you for the time, then steals your watch when you raise your wrist, saying "well I guess they weren't *really* interested in the time after all!" does not rebuke the mugger, it just shows you don't quite understand what just happened.

Feels like many of my followers could use these images in some wonderful memes. Or in flirting. Or you can just be happy knowing that the Deaf community tends to be very queer-positive and that even "mainstream" apps teach LGBTQ+ terms, etc.

But also, yeah, I know some of you -- even hearies -- are gonna be dropping these screenshots in non-ASL conversations, heh. 🤟

A screenshot of an ASL tutorial app, where the pictured individual is tapping their chin with their index finger as their thumb is extended, making their hand into an "L" shape. The user is asked to "choose the correct sign" and the possible definitions are "Laugh" "Lesbian" "Girl" and "Smile"

The correct answer is Lesbian.A screenshot of an ASL tutorial app where the user is asked to "fill in the gap with the right word" and the sentence in questions is "Me _____, you, too?" Possible definitions are "Gay" "Lesbian" and "Straight"

Just a note for the next time anyone schedules a conference in Texas:

It is now literally illegal for trans people to use the bathroom there.

Your trans friends and colleagues are going to be silently judging you for hosting events in a place it's illegal for them to exist when there's lots of other states to pick from.

In the first edit, there were still crisp clouds in the background. I thought the picture was good and done. I just wanted to quickly raise the exposure to see what more of the bridge would show - and the clouds disappeared, leaving me with the real image. Reduced to the essentials: the rhythm, the rhyme.

#Photography #BlackAndWhite #Squared
Square-format black-and-white photograph. The image shows a section of a bridge crossing diagonally from the lower left to the upper right. Along its edge, a row of tall, curved street lamps rises upward, each leaning in the same direction and forming a repeating pattern. In the upper left corner, part of another bridge appears as a broad dark arc cutting across the bright background. The sky is plain and featureless, emphasizing the stark contrast of the bridge structures and lamps.
