My previous laptop was called backpack, and its successor will be called bbackpack. Not only does the number of B's signify that it's version 2, it will also make any network person think that they've encountered a weird glitch. That's a two-for-one!

And people say naming things is hard.

Tonight I set up a ssh tunnel that punches out from my server skipping the NAT, forwarding, and DNS complexities entirely. It’ll dial home from anywhere there’s network so I could even take my server to the park and it should work over 5g.

New ISA proposal: UTF-8 instructions

* variable width but you can count leading bits in the decoder to quickly find out how wide an instruction is
* use zero-width joiners to attach modifiers, e.g. atomic add is “lock zwj add”
* self-synchronizing means it’s easy to disassemble and you can’t jump to the middle of an instruction
* emoji

dear god. I'm in an all-hands call. director says we are adopting a "zero-defect approach" by... ceasing to work on bug fixes, delegate bug fixes to LLMs, while developers focus on new features. I think I've already encountered this approach already, with a GDPR-breaching bug introduced by a "refactoring" fix in July by a dev I'd never heard of before

anyone looking for an application support engineer/developer/general computer-wrangler, remote or based in Glasgow?
