Large organizations and corporations moving to open source is a great thing.

If they have budget, they should still contribute and "pay" for the open source software they use.

Edit: Adding in this key quote as a positive example:

"Austria isn't just replacing Microsoft software. Unlike typical public-sector and corporate migrations, Austria's military has heavily invested in LibreOffice development itself. The armed forces have been funding the creation of new features and improvements that are now included in public releases. These additions, ranging from improved slideshow editing to better handling of pivot tables, have been rolled into the latest version of LibreOffice."

I have two VPSes in the Oracle Cloud free tier.

If I worshiped MAGA and billionaires, I'd be in the right place.

So it's time to let them go.

I thought about moving back to NearlyFreeSpeech.net, but for now I have my sites set up on my Tilde Club account:

tilde.club/~passthejoe/zola

tilde.club/~passthejoe/hugo/

tilde.club/~passthejoe/shinobi

With this arrangement, the hosting is still free (though I have donated in the past and will do again). Also, I don't have to maintain anything.

"Django is heavy."

Flip-side:
- full-featured, i.e. "batteries included"
- all pieces are tailored to work perfectly together
- reduces decision fatigued, i.e. "analysis paralysis"
- quicker to start new projects
- no concern that a particular dependency might get outdated
- most pieces are optional or can be swapped out, e.g. Jinja2, database backends, etc.
- "stand on the shoulders of giants" instead of cobbling together your own framework that you now need to maintain, forever

"Django changes too slowly."

Flip-side:
- instead of "move fast and break things", it's more like "move deliberately and ensure long-term stability"
- backwards-compatibility is stellar
- upgrading to new versions is not a panic-inducing situation
- being volunteer-led, governed by elected officers, and stewarded by paid maintainers will always be better than being beholden to a massive tech company and/or a tech bro's whims

Like you, I'm sick to the back teeth of talking about AI. Like you, I keep getting dragged into AI discussions. Unlike you‡, I spent the summer writing a book about why I'm sick of writing about AI⹋, which Farrar, Straus and Giroux will publish in 2026.
