Tidy … a red squirrel in Wales. The Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales has launched a campaign in response to a proposed energy park development that threatens to destroy 40 hectares of forest, home to one of the last red squirrel populations in Wales. They were once a common sight in forests across the country, but now there are just three populations of red squirrels left.

Shark threesome

A trio of leopard sharks in New Caledonia, Australia, has made marine science history after they were seen mating in a “threesome”. It is the first time the globally endangered species has been documented in what the Journal of Ethnology delicately called “group courtship/copulating behaviour”.

A female crab on a submarine power cable. Scientists from the University of Portsmouth’s Institute of Marine Sciences have found that female crabs show “significantly greater sensitivity” to electromagnetic fields from underwater power cables than males, which could affect how they migrate and where they lay their eggs.

Artificial Democracy: The Impact of Big Data on Politics, Policy, and Polity by Cecilia Biancalana & Eric Montigny, 2025

A look into the political consequences of big data and artificial intelligence. Democracy and data have a complicated relationship. Under the influence of big data and artificial intelligence, some democracies are being transformed as relations between citizens, political parties, governments, and corporations are gradually redrawn.

Artificial Democracy explores the ways in which data collection and analytics and their application are changing political practices, government policies, and even democratic policies themselves. With an international roster of multidisciplinary contributors, this topical collection takes a comprehensive approach to big data's effect on democracy, from the use of micro-targeting in electoral campaigns to the clash between privacy and surveillance in the name of protecting society. The book tackles both the dangers and the potentially desirable changes made possible by the symbiosis of big data and artificial intelligence. It explores shifts in how we conceptualize the citizen-government relationship and asks important questions about where we could be heading.

Trickle of aid insufficient to address Gaza catastrophe

Martin Griffiths, director of Mediation Group International, has warned starvation in Gaza continues to spread as Israeli troops press deeper into the cut-off north.

“It’s either displacement or death in Gaza City, or displacement and death in al-Mawasi,” Griffiths said, referring to the area in the south of the Strip that Israel designated a so-called “humanitarian zone.”
