Here's the original, unaltered U.S. floppy disk version of SimCity Classic for DOS. With file dates from August of 1993, this is the very first revision. Sorry for the delay, but I imported these from the USA. For the retro collectors!

@carnage4lifeDare Obasanjo This is the root cause of almost all technical conflicts I need to mediate. People wasting their time arguing, instead of understanding.

The eng leads at YouTube had a great way of addressing this. One of the ground rules for any VP-level Eng Review was that each side needed to be able to articulate the other sides perspective, including pros/cons and top concerns. If you failed to demonstrate this during the review (either explicitly or implicitly), then the meeting was stopped and rescheduled for later. Both sides were told to go back, understand each other's points, rework the deck, and come back when they could articulate each other's side.

SVPs shouldn't waste their time mediating catfights. They need to focus on making hard technical decisions that will determine the success or failure of the company. Putting this ground rule in place (and living by it) quickly got the message across -- don't bring us fights, bring us hard problems with difficult tradeoffs.

Worked wonders.

Some weeks ago on Mastodon I saw in passing the mention of the name of an author who apparently is working on a new book to be published as part of the MIT Platform Studies series, about the Atari 8 bits.

At the time I went looking for any hint on the author's website that such a book was in progress, then searched more widely, but could find nothing. And then I forgot the author's name.

Perhaps the fine person who namechecked the author on Mastodon is here, and can remind me? ...and perhaps mention how they're aware of this work?

(I know Joe Decuir is working on a book - this is not that book.)

Please boost for reach!

I'm thrilled that Laurenz Stampfl, a student at ETH Zurich, has completed his Masters degree, and has published the thesis: ethz.ch/content/dam/ethz/speci

The work is based on prototypes I did in the last few months, but is a complete reimplementation with lots of optimizations, including portable SIMD. I believe it's the fastest pure Rust CPU renderer, and also shares a lot of logic with vello_hybrid.

Mastodon users, you might want to check out the "timed mute" option, it's really useful! It lets you set a period (6 hours to 30 days) when an account is muted. It's handy for taking a break from someone.

To make a timed mute, you'll need to be using the website, web app or some third party apps. Mute as usual but before confirming the mute click "show options" and select a time period.

If you want to still get notifications from them, untick the "hide notifications" box.

New from 404 Media: you can't refuse to be scanned by ICE's new facial recognition app, according to internal DHS document I obtained. Photos captured by the app are stored for 15 years, including U.S. citizens. We've seen officers scanning faces w/ phones on streets

It's annoying to have my body slowly but steadily leaking, but at least it's snot and not any of the other alternatives. Most of them are messier.

(I guess sweat is technically 'leaking' and I do put up with that a lot due to biking.)

This is also a thing you hear about tech unions—why do overpaid software devs need labour protections—and it stems from 1) totally overgeneralizing the makeup of software devs, the vast majority of whom don’t have SV salaries despite being beholden to their trends, and 2) fundamentally misunderstanding the role of software devs as waged labour and thus still vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. If the union protects one person who needed it then the union is worth it.
