Really interesting teen subculture: straightedge art kids. (They're developing IT skills just to turn off or avoid "AI" slop—this gives me hope for the future)

For a lot of these kids (I've also heard them called the "AI vegans") a big college decision is coming up. And colleges, unfortunately, have middle managers who mandate fad-chasing just as much as other organizations do.

How to make a college short list that will be compatible with not being required to play with slop for 4 years?

Steam Hardware Thoughts

I know a lot of folks have been going on about it, but Steam's latest hardware announcement has been utterly insane for the day and age in which we live.

Consider that they didn't hype it up with a launch event. They didn't sell a bunch of hype and buzzwords. All they did was release a ~6 minute video that effectively described the hardware and what it would provide, and had a webpage with *actual specs on it*.

They invited a bunch of tech reporters/YouTubers to their HQ, but they let them talk to *engineers*, not marketing people. The discussions focused on real capabilities of the hardware, and actual demonstrations. No vapor and promises. Not glitz and glam.

They made it clear this is all SteamOS driven, and that they have a focus of getting *existing x86 Windows software* running not only on Linux, but on ARM and in VR!!

They aren't pitching a closed ecosystem. They said, outright, "This is your hardware, you can do whatever you want with it".

THEY DIDN'T MENTION AI ONCE.

And they're _already_ making a bigger splash than any competitor ever did, even though those competitors have gobs more money they've thrown at this stuff, and tremendously more staff.

It's flabbergasting. I hope they make enough of an impact with all this that people sit up and take notice.

So a little while ago, Firefox introduced a profiles option to separate your different uses.

Great, but now every 6 hours, I get a prompt telling me to make a new profile because the one I'm using is built on an older version of Firefox.

Cool, so I go to make a new profile. Right?

You can't make a new profile without going into about:whatever, and if I have to look it up, I'm not doing it. The new profile doesn't import from the old profile.

It messed up my sync to my Android Firefox. Which is really the only thing keeping me on Firefox. Great. This works on my old profile though.

So today, I tried making a new profile again for work purposes. Have you tried switching between profiles? Yeah, I'm still confused.

Imagine being funded on the degree of Mozilla and not understanding the importance of "migration" and "backwards compatibility", especially in a consumer product.

That's just bad UX, fam. Back to containers it is.

I've received 5 VC offers "to chat" regarding CatSalad in the past few sidereal days.

Not for sale.

CatSalad belongs to the cats.

I'd rather be sleepy and true to my beliefs (snacks), than sell out.

That's why I'm organizing a Meowstarter to fund the ethical shitposting of @catsaladCatSalad🐈🥗 (D.Burch) :blobcatrainbow:, @catsalad@lgbtqia.spaceCatSalad🐈🥗 :neocat_floof__w:💤, @catsalad@masto.hackers.townCatSalad🐈🥗 (D.B.), and more.

It's time that somekitty stood up to them, instead of joining them.

Are you with me?

Recently, I've been thinking a lot about the power and tyranny of copy and paste for technical content. Yes, you read that correctly.

A few thoughts:

- If code snippets don't work directly via ctrl-c/ctrl-v they are broken.

- We teach by pasting code/commands. Embedded assumption: it won't actively damage their system. This is a bad assumption.

- I'll bet a high % of software is adopted because it was copy/pasted from a page into a proof of concept then uncritically put into production.

Got home to be greeted by darkness because of a power outage. Lucky power came back when it did because it enabled the Flume to start working and tell us about the massive water leak between the meter and the house. Seems we have our own mini black hole because none of the hundreds of wasted gallons is visible anywhere. Digging into the earthquake kit for water supplies...

Anyway, living the mini-post-apocalypse right now.
