I'm still of the opinion that we need an organisational fork of Mozilla, preferably not domiciled in the US.

We have technical forks like librewolf, that's not what I'm asking for. I'm asking for new stewards of the upstream code. Although perhaps if the forks want to consider how they'd become a hard fork, with an organisational structure that would work too.

Mozilla is a product of it's surroundings. It's surroundings was silicon valley and well 🤷‍♀️

Citizens United, or as I like to call it, "the worst SCOTUS decision since slavery". Infinite money in politics turns out to be a massive self-own on democracy. Lawrence Lessig, you are an incredible person doing amazing work, and I love you, man.. but .. I don't know how we can realistically dig ourselves out of this pit. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens

DON'T GIVE UP HOPE!
REMEMBER!

this isn't being snuck in through the back gate because they want to.

they HAD to sneak this in through the back gate, because a month ago, we made damn sure they couldn't get in through the front.

THAT is a victory in and of itself.

we got the german government to block the initial bill in october.

THAT is a victory in and of itself.

MORE MEPS IN FRANCE OPPOSE CHAT CONTROL THAN THEY DO SUPPORT IT!

THAT is a victory in and of itself.

keep sending emails to MEPs!
keep fighting for our privacy!

let's END this shitty bill!

fightchatcontrol.eu

The image shows a summary of the French MEP positions on fightchatcontrol.eu.

It shows that a whopping 43 MEPs oppose chat control, as compared to the 38 MEPs that support it. This potentially means the French gov't doesn't have enough MEPs to push it through. And it may be that MEPs have a free vote, so more will join them on the day.

That is a huge achievement.

I think nobody wants AI in Firefox, Mozilla manualdousuario.net/en/mozilla

Does anyone wants AI in anything? Microsoft went batshit crazy about AI and so the others are following them. Google felt like they will lose to OpenAI in search biz and again they went crazy like Microsoft. AI in current format is a huge waste of resources and copyright theft.

What I'm listening to today: "An Ambient Jam in 31 Tone Equal Temperament", The Creepy Silence

Western music is based on 12 tones, equally-spaced (on a logarithmic scale), which happen to come very close to "good-sounding" pitch ratios. There are some historical attempts at numbers other than 12.

Here, a launchpad rigged for 31-TET is used to perform 15 minutes of messy, engrossing, exploratory astral disembodiment music. Music for a power outage on a spaceship

What I'm listening to today: "Scandinavia", Billy Woods, ELUCID and The Alchemist

Woods and ELUCID just dropped an album under the name Armand Hammer and it's INCREDIBLE. Woods and clique have this idiom of slowed-down, format-breaking rap music and it gets better and more refined with each release. Parts of "Mercy" sound like early Portishead, other parts sound like nothing I've ever heard before. There's like 4 tracks on here I wanna link but here's some ominous piano

I’ve been testing a theory: many people who are high on and are just new to automation and don’t realize you can automate processes with simple programming, if/then conditions, and API calls with zero AI involved.

So far it’s been working!

Whenever I’ve been asked to make an AI flow or find a way to implement AI in our work with a client, I’ve returned back with an automation flow that uses 0 AI.

Things like “when a new document is added here, add a link to it in this spreadsheet and then create a task in our project management software assigned to X with label Y”.

And the people who were frothing at the mouth at how I must change my mind on AI have (so far) all responded with resounding enthusiasm and excitement.

They think it’s the same thing. They just don’t understand how much automation is possible without any generative tools.

uspol / trans rights

When Trump II came into office, in accordance with their campaign-sized bribe from Elon Musk, they immediately started cutting off passport renewals for transgender people (or sending renewed passports back with the gender marker arbitrarily flipped— "gender assigned at inauguration"). As a trans living outside the US, what I've been waiting for is when passports issued under *previous* Presidents start getting revoked or confiscated.

It's coming (🧵):

Yay, the embargo was finally lifted yesterday so we can talk about the UK Government funding for !

They funded us (SCI) to do two projects, for a total of £7.7M:

  • Bring on CHERIoT to production qualities.
  • Build our second-generation chip with a dual-issue core, post-quantum crypto hardware, and an edge inference accelerator.

Modern deep learning becomes much easier to understand when you can build every idea yourself.

Deep Learning Crash Course walks you through neural networks, transformers, generative models, diffusion models, GNNs, and more using real code that shows how each system actually works.

A clear path for anyone who wants practical AI skills supported by hands on examples.

nostarch.com/deep-learning-cra

Every print book comes with a free Ebook!

Book cover for Deep Learning Crash Course: A Hands-On, Project-Based Introduction to Artificial Intelligence. The top section has a blue band and large bold black text reading “DEEP LEARNING CRASH COURSE.” Below that, in smaller black text: “A Hands-On, Project-Based Introduction to Artificial Intelligence.”
The illustration shows a stylized white dragon with black outlines and shading. It has large wings, mechanical armor, and what looks like a jetpack or propulsion system on its back, shooting flames as it flies forward. The background is pale yellow with soft cloud-like shapes.
At the bottom, the authors’ names appear in small black text: “G. Volpe, B. Midtvedt, J. Pineda, H.K. Moberg, H. Bachimanchi, J.B. Pereira, & C. Manzo.” In the lower-right corner is the No Starch Press logo.

Steam Hardware Thoughts

I know a lot of folks have been going on about it, but Steam's latest hardware announcement has been utterly insane for the day and age in which we live.

Consider that they didn't hype it up with a launch event. They didn't sell a bunch of hype and buzzwords. All they did was release a ~6 minute video that effectively described the hardware and what it would provide, and had a webpage with *actual specs on it*.

They invited a bunch of tech reporters/YouTubers to their HQ, but they let them talk to *engineers*, not marketing people. The discussions focused on real capabilities of the hardware, and actual demonstrations. No vapor and promises. Not glitz and glam.

They made it clear this is all SteamOS driven, and that they have a focus of getting *existing x86 Windows software* running not only on Linux, but on ARM and in VR!!

They aren't pitching a closed ecosystem. They said, outright, "This is your hardware, you can do whatever you want with it".

THEY DIDN'T MENTION AI ONCE.

And they're _already_ making a bigger splash than any competitor ever did, even though those competitors have gobs more money they've thrown at this stuff, and tremendously more staff.

It's flabbergasting. I hope they make enough of an impact with all this that people sit up and take notice.
