There is a bittersweet part to it, and I think I will miss it, but it also felt necessary. It feels like a goodbye, but it isn't—I intend to stay on and continue to advise the new leadership and contribute, because Mastodon—and the fediverse—is one of the very few beacons of hope for a better web.

One of the things we don't talk about enough is how to secure the peaceful transition of power in open source projects.
We've all seen BDFLs turn into mad kings.
There are innumerable projects which have collapsed when the founder left.
Hostile takeovers prevail in some communities.
The whole Mastodon team should feel proud at this move. A clear structure, fair compensation, and a secure footing for the future.

In my opinion, this post perfectly illustrates why Mastodon is what it is, and why I love the Fediverse so much. Despite its flaws and nicheness, it's the last functioning, human-centric version of the ReadWriteWeb. Social media as it should be. Eugen shows that he has his heart in the right place.

We are happy to announce that we have been given a stand at FOSDEM for 2026. We will be releasing more information closer to the time. We're all really excited to catch up with everyone in person. There will hopefully be some charlie the unicorn stickers to give out as well (yay!)
