I'm sure that it was within the last couple of years that I mentioned something here about a 1950s short story that took for granted that computers were infallible. And honestly, two or three years ago computers were still fairly reliable.

How low we've fallen in just a couple of years of AI going mainstream!

Today I am stepping down from my role as the CEO of . Though this has been in the works for a while, I can't say I've fully processed how I feel about it. There is a bittersweet part to it, and I think I will miss it, but it also felt necessary. It feels like a goodbye, but it isn't—I intend to stay on and continue to advise the new leadership and contribute, because Mastodon—and the fediverse—is one of the very few beacons of hope for a better web.

Remember kids, always check for planets before taking a 5 minute exposure with a 4 meter telescope to look for Kuiper Belt Objects!

Background: My collaborator running the processing for our survey is now wading through that hilarious/super annoying mistake I made, but was able to be utilized by other members of my team to add to another ongoing survey and help find even more moons of Saturn news.ubc.ca/2025/03/saturn-128

An image from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope showing a horribly over-exposed bright planet at the bottom, and weird circular reflections throughout the telescope image.

@smallcirclesjust small circles 🕊 @fossham This is truly staggering.

Open-source software has an economic value of 8.8 trillion US dollars. Without open-source programs, companies would have to spend around 3.5 times more money on software. This is according to a study by Harvard Business School. Around 95 percent of this figure is attributable to 3,000 developers worldwide. In addition, open-source software is included in 96 percent of all codebases.

I just finished watching as Macron talked last at the livestream from Summit on European Digital Sovereignty
bmds.bund.de/aktuelles/eu-summ

not sure if we can rewatch the day at some later time

The commission has a news notice and a link to nothing (the full program) – is this how they usually do it? ec.europa.eu/commission/pressc

looks like it is the host that host the program though bmds.bund.de/aktuelles/eu-summ

Here is the best peek article I found so far element.io/blog/element-at-the

Mastodon and the Fediverse matter to me because they present a truly viable alternative to this model, by showing its users no advertisement, respecting users’ privacy, focussing on keeping users safe, and allowing them to connect to the Fediverse and beyond rather than putting them into a digital prison to extract as much metadata about them to please advertisers.
(3/13)

My vision for Mastodon is a different direction than all previous attempts at social media, by focussing on community ownership, Trust & Safety features, slow user & server growth, and financial sustainability - for the non-profit project, the server administrators, the moderators, and creators in the Fediverse. I’m thrilled to have @haubleshannah aubry as Community Director and @renchapRenaud Chaput as Technical Director on my side in making this vision a reality.

Hi! Today is my first official day as the Executive Director of Mastodon, replacing @GargronEugen Rochko as CEO. I joined the Mastodon team more than 5 years ago, mostly working for Mastodon in the evenings on top of a 120% day job. I was the driving force behind the incorporation of the German non-profit, am a co-founder of the US 501c3 non-profit, and I have contributed to most of the fundraising success, which allowed us to expand the team.

Canceled my subscription for and uninstalled it due poor software design decisions which made app not ready to outage - during it GitKraken desktop GIT client unable to connect to a git service I use (not affected by ClownFlare issues).
I guess the problem was caused by the fact that the GitKraken is not a local-first application that was heavily dependent on API calls to a CloudFlare-affected backend.

Spent 2 hours on looking for better Git UI/UX options as many sites shown in Kagi search results gone dark due that outage.
This whole situation is another example of how it is important for software to be local-first and if network function is unavoidable, it is important to keep it either available within LAN, or with an option to quickly spin an alternative instance (decentralized, federated?) or to make network part and use as less bigtech services/companies as possible. 2/2

I wonder what all the slop zombies out there are doing during the Cloudflare outage. I mean, they cannot ask ChatGPT what to do next, like they would normally do.
Are they just sitting in front of their screens now, completely motionless, waiting to be prompted? 🤔

RE: social.inmediahk.net/@editor/1
