What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

30-Second Architecture: The 50 Most Significant Principles and Styles in Architecture, Each Explained in Half a Minute by Edward Denison, 2013

Exactly what did Roman architects do for us? Can you identify a voussoir or a vault? What is “architecture of the veil?” Are you able to articulate on Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles? And who was the father of the skyscraper?

This set of 50 explanations of the innovations, theories, styles, and developments in architecture will equip you with all the answers and provide a rock-solid grounding in the essentials of the built environment—from ancient tomb to urban icon.
30-Second Architecture presents you with the foundations of architectural knowledge, explaining each idea, no matter how complex, using 300 words and one picture: all easily digested in a spare half minute. Expert authors are challenged to define and describe both the principles upon which architects depend, and the styles with which they put those principles into practice. So, if you want to know your arch from your elevation, and your Baroque from your Byzantine, or you wish to end your next dinner party with a stirring speech on biomimetics, this is the quickest way to construct your argument.

I've seen a lot of posts focusing on the specific issues that caused the recent Cloudflare incident, but no discourse about how these companies are being run.

We've known how to build completely reliable computer systems for decades. When things fall apart, it's not because we don't know how to do it, it's because cutting corners has become the norm.

A Geordi La Forge aye/nay meme. In the first panel Geordi raises his hand to reject the phrase "developers are incompetent", in the second panel he points his finger towards the phrase "management didn't allocate enough time and resources"

"But the cookie banners?" -

Firstly, these aren't necessary if you don't do any shady stuff OR legitimate processing the user ought to know about

Secondly, wouldn't they be a small price to pay for protection from the depredations of the data market?

Because that's what is really about. Not red tape but protection from ruthless predators.

And it has far too many loopholes already.

30-Second Evolution by Mark Fellowes, 2015

Adapt or die: it's nature's most famous imperative. But how does evolution actually happen? It's too slow to see, but it's going on all around you, all the time. Even if you're on top of the key terms - variation? Natural selection? Parent-offspring conflict? - you still need some context to put them in. From populations to speciation and polymorphism to evolutionary psychology, here's the one-stop source for all you need to know.

Evolution unlocks the laboratory of life, dissecting it into the 50 most significant topics that provide the missing links to understand the natural world's four-billion-year ancestry and the process of natural selection in which species either adapt in myriad ways - mutation, ingenuity, and intelligence - to meet the challenges of a changing environment, or die. Unravel the development of living organisms, at micro and macro level - from genes to geniuses.

I declare that today, Nov. 19, 2025 is the 50th anniversary of BitBLT, a routine so fundamental to computer graphics that we don't even think about it having an origin. A working (later optimized) implementation was devised on the Xerox Alto by members of the Smalltalk team. It made it easy to arbitrarily copy and move arbitrary rectangles of bits in a graphical bitmap. It was this routine that made Smalltalk's graphical interface possible. Below is part of a PARC-internal memo detailing it:

A scanned PARC-internal memo entitled "Bit BLT." The full document may be found here: https://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/xerox/alto/BitBLT_Nov1975.pdf

30-Second Chemistry: The 50 Most Elemental Concepts in Chemistry, Each Explained in Half a Minute by Nivaldo Tro, 2020

30-Second Chemistry presents the 50 most important ideas in the science of matter – its composition, structure, properties and how it changes. As the central science that bridges biology and physics, chemistry explains the diversity of all things tangible at a molecular level.

Understand chemistry, and you’ll know why some things oxidize and others explode; why food is good to eat and coal is not. 30-Second Chemistry breaks the subject down into 50 bitesize elements that help us understand the nature of matter, including: • Atoms, molecules and compounds • States of matter• Chemical reactions and energetics • Inorganic chemistry • Organic chemistry • Biochemistry • Nuclear chemistry Chemistry is the heart of cooking, it can keep you safe, and it explains why things work. This book brings the subject out of the lab and boils it down to its essential elements – in just 30 seconds. If you like this, you might also be interested in 30-Second Elements, 30-Second Physics and 30-Second Biology.
