Re: last boost chaos.social/@dpk/115589097803

That OCaml PR is textbook open source in the era of vibe coding...

It's got everything:

- PR submitted without the author acknowledging they didn't write it and don't understand it.
- Copyright laundering.
- "I just wanted to get it done!" versus maintainers who know they have to live with code contributions for years.
- Zero-effort pasting LLM output as reply to real people's thoughtful questions. (At least the author acknowledged what they were doing that time.)
- It doesn't matter that it's hard to review because "AI has a very deep understanding of how this code works."
- "Beats me. AI decided to do so and I didn't question it."

If this is our new world then it's going to turbocharge maintainer burnout. :dumpster_fire:

(If you don't want to read a quite long often depressing thread, would still recommend reading this well reasoned comment by one of the maintainers:
github.com/ocaml/ocaml/pull/14 )

I knit up a test swatch of the bitwise fractal pattern to see how it reads as knitwear. Pretty good, I think! Now I have to decide if I really want to commit to a full blanket. I've never done one, so it's tempting. But that's a LOT of work.

A rectangular swatch of stockinette knit fabric, about 20 by 30 cm, pinned to a blocking mat.It is done in black and white color work. The pattern is a seemingly random, fractal-feeling checkerboard happening at all scales from 1x1 up to 16x16 at the same time.

I was curious about the parameter space for the bitwise fractal function, so I bashed out a quick animation script. I'm varying the x offset parameter, which was -350 in the original, but I've found thing stay more interesting in this 400x400 window if I keep that even larger, so here it is running from -600 to -400.

I think this might be what looking at the brain hacking QR code in Snow Crash might have felt like.

NEW | Israel planned airstrikes on Lebanon’s capital Beirut but was reportedly pressured by the U.S. to hold off, aiming to avoid large-scale escalation with Hezbollah, Israeli media reports.

Meanwhile, Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty continue unabated. According to UNIFIL, Israel has committed over 10,000 breaches: 7,500 airspace violations and 2,500 ground violations, including the construction of an illegal wall on Lebanese land, rendering more than 4,000 m² inaccessible, all in clear breach of UN Resolution 1701.

These violations are not abstract numbers: they include hundreds of killings of men, women, and children, underscoring Israel’s persistent attacks against Lebanon and its residents.

I boosted something about this, but it seems to have vanished. So here is a very young Cory Doctorow (@pluralisticCory Doctorow) explaining with great enthusiasm some of the things that were on the internet in 1995, like Usenet and the Internet Underground Music Archive. I have to say, we've lost a lot of really cool stuff!
