politics, useless governments

@sashin @Em0nM4stodonEm :official_verified:
many would argue that government has been hollowed out by business/wealth. every politician has rich donors making a buck on the back end

Adam Smith said that state and business are in a boxing match and one steps out of line the other smacks them, but I don't even recall the last time state threw anything close to a punch

the only time we've had epic social progress its been due to pressure from the outside - the civil rights movement, forcing politicians into a corner

perhaps, as Sashin says, forcing the ruling into a corner

its really them state cares about - and the compromises from past battles are the things we took for granted growing up

but if people that came before us managed to push the ruling class into a corner then it can be done again - don't get defeatist

My Feedly Pro annual subscription finally expired, so I switched to @Inoreader on @molly0xfffMolly White's recommendation. It does everything Feedly did but better, without shoving unwanted AI features and ads for creepy corporate surveillance/threat intelligence services down my throat. Recommended! inoreader.com/

I’m starting to go over some of my favourite albums this year, and this live version is great.
Triple Deer are a Taiwanese post rock (ish, sort of) band that sing in Amis, one of the indigenous languages of Taiwan. I really like the album this comes from, SOWAL.

This irrational fear of socialism from some politicians in the US looks so bizarre from Canada, a country with universal healthcare and some kind of social net that is still sadly very much under the grasp of destructive capitalism.

Are those politicians terrified the people could be healthy, fed, safe, and happy? What exactly terrifies them here?

@Em0nM4stodonEm :official_verified: Nothing about this terrifies them. It’s performative creation of a boogeyman to distract US citizens from the real causes of the problems in this country.

What does worry them is the possibility that people will see through the subterfuge and realize what they are doing. That’s why they work so hard to silence criticism and generate so much anti socialism propaganda.

Save the Children!

✅ Ban AI-chatbot groomers

✅ Secure children's communications with end-to-end encryption

✅ Forbid companies from requesting personal identification or biometrics of children or potential children

✅ Prohibit privacy-invasive legislation like Chat Control or Age Verification laws that would endanger the children

✅ Make it illegal to collect any personal data about children, potential children, parents of children, or ex-children

Child abuse, government mistreatment of families, racism

Ah, yes, of course the country pushing chat control in the EU would also be the one with "parenting tests", taking away newborn babies if you fail. There's no bias at all in those tests, pinky promise!

RE: fosstodon.org/@shollyethan/115

The self-hosting survey is out. Complete dominance by:

- Linux >90%
- Men >90%
- ...who work in Tech 80%

Outside this bubble:

- Linux: single digit percentage of people are familiar
- Work in tech: single digit percentages again in the US
- Male: ok that one is around 50%

People ask why don't users self-host? But the real question is why hasn't self-hosting been made attractive to the 90+% of the rest of the world?

HURGL!

DYMO LabelManager PnP worked perfectly fine via "labelle" last time I used it.
Today: nothing.

labelle reports no errors and printing success, but the printer never prints anything.

Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!
I just weant to print a label, not debug the whole stack.

TiDAR: Think in Diffusion, Talk in Autoregression

Diffusion language models hold the promise of fast parallel generation, while autoregressive (AR) models typically excel in quality due to their causal structure aligning naturally with language modeling. This raises a fundamental question: can we achieve a synergy with high throughput, higher GPU utilization, and AR level quality? Existing methods fail to effectively balance these two aspects, either prioritizing AR using a weaker model for sequential drafting (speculative decoding), leading to lower drafting efficiency, or using some form of left-to-right (AR-like) decoding logic for diffusion, which still suffers from quality degradation and forfeits its potential parallelizability. We introduce TiDAR, a sequence-level hybrid architecture that drafts tokens (Thinking) in Diffusion and samples final outputs (Talking) AutoRegressively - all within a single forward pass using specially designed structured attention masks. This design exploits the free GPU compute density, achieving a strong balance between drafting and verification capacity. Moreover, TiDAR is designed to be serving-friendly (low overhead) as a standalone model. We extensively evaluate TiDAR against AR models, speculative decoding, and diffusion variants across generative and likelihood tasks at 1.5B and 8B scales. Thanks to the parallel drafting and sampling as well as exact KV cache support, TiDAR outperforms speculative decoding in measured throughput and surpasses diffusion models like Dream and Llada in both efficiency and quality. Most notably, TiDAR is the first architecture to close the quality gap with AR models while delivering 4.71x to 5.91x more tokens per second.
