In 2017 Randall Munroe posted a strip called "Seven Years" about being the caregiver for a loved one dealing with cancer:

https://xkcd.com/1928/

That strip literally made me cry, it was such a clear telling of what that experience is like; much of it could have been about my own life.

Except that my own experience had a different ending.

Today he put out "Fifteen Years":

https://xkcd.com/3172/

This one made me want to cheer. What a joy to see a story that has played out so differently, so much better. I have never crossed paths with Mr. Munroe, but I rejoice in his and his family's good fortune as if he were a good friend.

Here's to many more years.

Evidence suggests early developing human brains are preconfigured with instructions for understanding the world

news.ucsc.edu/2025/11/sharf-pr

So, it is like software or firmware that comes with default instructions for building something useful using that app; however, here you can go on and build your own life with default set of instructions to understand the world. How cool is that? Can this info used to treat brain disorders? Can we fix bugs in the default instructions to improve life?

Want to know what climate change will look like?

The drought in Tehran has gotten so bad that people are seriously talking about evacuating the city!

"Tehran — the richest city of Iran, the most politically powerful city with more than 15 million in the metropolitan — is facing day zero in a few days or a few weeks," said Kaveh Madani, director of the United Nations University's Institute for Water, Environment and Health.

"Day zero" means NO WATER.

All of Iran is in a drought — the worst in nearly 60 years. Tehran has had no rain at all since the start of September, and no rainfall is expected for the foreseeable future.

The city depends on five major reservoirs for its water: Lar, Latyan, Amir Kabir, Mamlu and Talegan. Lar Dam is at only 2% of its capacity, while Latyan is 9% full. Amir Kabir, one of the most important dams for Tehran, is 11% full. Mamlu reservoir is only 1% full. Only Taleqan remains above one-third.

Right now the incompetent government is *talking* about rationing — but water pressure is already down to zero at night in many neighborhoods. Young Tehranis are tracking water pressure with crowd-sourced maps, shading parts of the city in red to show almost constant outages. Meanwhile, some rich neighborhoods still fill their swimming pools.

I'm not saying this drought is solely due to climate change, nor that climate change will cause droughts everywhere. But this is the sort of thing we should expect: prolonged droughts in some areas, leading eventually to mass migrations.

Quick status update regarding usa02.bsd.cafe.

Yesterday, at 16:11 my monitoring reported the server as unreachable.
The provider’s console indicated urgent maintenance on the physical host, and the VM was not manageable. The console could be opened, but the system was entirely unresponsive.

A support ticket was opened at 21:00. There was no reply until the following morning.

After posting an update on Mastodon, I was contacted and asked for the ticket number. Once provided, the server became reachable through the console again, although still disconnected from the network. It appeared to have been running during the outage, just isolated.

Several tests were performed, but network connectivity did not return.

At 10:56 support replied stating that the VM had been relocated to a new node. In practice it remained offline, and I reported this.
Around 11:10 they accessed the console; I joined as well. A hard reboot was performed, leading to a filesystem check.

At 11:15 the server became reachable again. Support then confirmed they had identified and resolved the underlying issue.

It took more effort than it should have to get this resolved, and the whole process was far from smooth. Still, this is the first time anything like this has happened in many years, and my trust remains.

In all seriousness, what do we do now? Has this been stopped? Is it safe to start scanning our deps and know we find everything? Do we have to assume running `npm install` is extremely dangerous right now? What is npm doing?

I’ve advised my company to pause JavaScript development for the time being, and that surely can’t be it?
