What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

it can do execution very well but it’s not very good at “good engineering” yet. it’s missing good taste and good habits, no intuition for when to dig deeper or when to change paths. probably can be improved but i have to be continuously correcting where it’s going when terrain is nontrivial

About a zillion years ago on Slashdot, people were trading "luser stories" of dumb shit they'd see working IT, and someone described a user who had pulled off the keys on their keyboard and rearranged them expecting this to actually change the keyboard layout. And I remember reading that story and going… wait… wait that's actually a very reasonable idea… why CAN'T we make it work that way?

This time I am actually siding with the recurrent neural network. Why *isn't* "a,000" reasonable English?

@mcc I've seen something similar with the setting the addresses on old mainframe/mini drives in the 70s. There's a plug with the ID printed on the front, an encoded physically in plastic tabs on the back. If you swap those two "0" and "1" plugs, you will swap the addresses of the two drives.

Two big washing machine style RP06 mainframe disk drives from the 70s.

this is part of the "Buy One Give One" program we've had since I started Wizard Zines in 2018, where we give away 1 PDF zine for every copy sold. It's for anyone for whom $12 USD is a barrier to buy a zine.

Apparently the Earth Maiden Arjuna (Earth Girl Arjuna) soundtrack albums by Yoko Kanno and others are being re-released this coming February (2026) for the 25th anniversary of the anime (which will also be re-released, at least in Japan). I have no idea if there will be an authorized digital source where you can get DRM-free versions.

I am unreasonably fond of the Arjuna soundtrack, along with the anime. Cf mastodon.social/@cks/110924472

FYI for potentially interested parties: the next Bandcamp Friday (when Bandcamp sends all¹ of the money to artists) is coming up this Friday, December 5th. You may wish to prepare your wishlists in advance, and those of us who follow a lot of BC artists should brace for email inbox impact.

Me, I've got some filtering and selection to do from my 'potential purchases' list.

¹ less fees charged by credit card processors, they're inescapable.

I recently gave a makeover to the project page for the first video game I ever made: fietkau.media/revelation_mentis

The game itself is a small adventure/exploration game for DOS. It's not much to look at. But I touched up the game itself and the web-based player to make it a lot more approachable:

- Full English translation
- Nicer menu navigation
- Touch controls on mobile! 🤯
- A cute little optional CRT filter
- Updated and , it no longer hangs the page on load for a second

A screenshot of a green top-down game landscape, showing bushes and dark pits in ASCII graphics. There is a smiley face as the protagonist and a red symbol as the goal. It's very simple DOS text mode visuals, but rendered through a CRT filter showing screen curvature and scanlines.

I sometimes see people describing resistance to LLM assisted coding as gatekeeping and I get that, software engineering culture is absolutely rife with gatekeeping, I quite literally dedicated dedicated my career to developer education because I want more people to have access to these opportunities.

But here's the thing, in order to fully participate in the world of software you will still need to learn to code, giving people the impression that isn't the case is not empowering.
