About a zillion years ago on Slashdot, people were trading "luser stories" of dumb shit they'd see working IT, and someone described a user who had pulled off the keys on their keyboard and rearranged them expecting this to actually change the keyboard layout. And I remember reading that story and going… wait… wait that's actually a very reasonable idea… why CAN'T we make it work that way?
This time I am actually siding with the recurrent neural network. Why *isn't* "a,000" reasonable English?
@mcc I've seen something similar with the setting the addresses on old mainframe/mini drives in the 70s. There's a plug with the ID printed on the front, an encoded physically in plastic tabs on the back. If you swap those two "0" and "1" plugs, you will swap the addresses of the two drives.

OMG it turns out this is due to the Mac APFS filesystem’s default case-mapping behavior, so things like SSH and LS work (bleccch).

New version of Encrust today to work around some issues with the new release of py2app; that release of py2app supports Python 3.14, so I think this might allow for shipping apps with 3.14 as well (although I haven't tested it yet, will probably do that momentarily): https://pypi.org/project/encrust/2025.11.30/

Apparently the Earth Maiden Arjuna (Earth Girl Arjuna) soundtrack albums by Yoko Kanno and others are being re-released this coming February (2026) for the 25th anniversary of the anime (which will also be re-released, at least in Japan). I have no idea if there will be an authorized digital source where you can get DRM-free versions.

I sometimes see people describing resistance to LLM assisted coding as gatekeeping and I get that, software engineering culture is absolutely rife with gatekeeping, I quite literally dedicated dedicated my career to developer education because I want more people to have access to these opportunities.
But here's the thing, in order to fully participate in the world of software you will still need to learn to code, giving people the impression that isn't the case is not empowering.
