Growing up a kiddo in the surveillance state must really suck. Everyone's a snitch. Your friends. Your friends' phones'. Your friends' parents. Your teacher. Your school. That Karen on the corner.

All desperate to upload every last piece of privacy you try to hold onto. How do you grow, smothered by so much scrutiny?

In Karel Čapek‘s 1920 play «R.U.R.», when talking about those who created robots (in this case artificial humans) for their personal profit, the character Alquist says: «They dreamed of the dividends. And on those dividends humanity will perish.»

More than a hundred years later, this fictional warning sounds oddly contemporary.

(Quote taken from the translation by Claudia Nowack, published by Penguin Books in 2004)

Aseel Taya was tragically slain in Gaza on December 2, 2023, as reported by the New York Times (first screenshot is from article): archive.ph/PXdHy#selection-777

Yet with a high degree of confidence, Aseel is alive and well, and even active here on Mastodon (second screenshot is from profile): mastodon.social/@aseelfromgz/m

Leaving two main possibilities:

1) New York Times made an error and never corrected it.

2) A cybercriminal is not only impersonating a dead Gaza victim to defraud users, but has joined the team at to help out their fraudster buddies.

Could it really be the case that Mastodon is hosting a ring of cybercriminals with the full complicity of the team, all while admins look the other way?

Do server operators have legal teams familiar with the concepts of civil and criminal liability, as well as knowledge of wire fraud statutes (which vary by jurisdiction)? Are admins unknowingly assuming the risk of donors suing them?

Since 2014, over 7 million Venezuelans have left the country, current inflation is sitting at over 200 per cent and there's projection that by the end of 2025 it could be as high as 500 per cent … Most Venezuelans are spending their days searching for basic food goods just to survive.

"There's extreme problems in relation to poverty, inequality and malnutrition … these things won't be easily resolved by regime change alone."
