We absolutely need legal consequences for self-driving car companies, but it bothers me that so many people think human drivers face consequences for hitting people. The US legal system bends over backwards not to penalize drivers who kill, and doesn't even bother to pretend with drivers who merely maim and traumatize.

i know everyone stopped thinking of the live action cowboy bebop ages ago but i finally was able to articulate what they got wrong. the big theme of the original Cowboy Bebop was the inherent dignity of caring deeply for something even if it isn't "important" and at every turn the live action series instead presented characters as pathetic for their trivial pursuits. all other complaints, the dialogue, the costumes, the pacing, are window dressing in comparison

Of all the questionable things about AI, I'm starting to think its biggest crime is simply the staggering amount of resources it has pointlessly drawn away from other, more important work and the way it has corrupted even organisations that were previously doing great work in some misguided, race-to-the-bottom belief that this is actually the most important thing for humankind.
