Is there, like, a term for all these crowd-funded phones coming out that are just Android phones but don't use Android userspace? Like, they normally are just halium phones because the vendors are too lazy to actually upstream drivers, meaning the phone will eventually die when updates become unprofitable to the manufacturer. I need just, like, a good summary word for them. Like FOSS-Washed Phones. Halium slop (but then that sounds mean to the halium project). Corpo Mobislop?

New, by me:

Drones to Diplomas: How Russia's Largest Private University is Linked to a $25M Essay Mill

A sprawling academic cheating network turbocharged by Google Ads that has generated nearly $25 million in revenue has curious ties to a Kremlin-connected oligarch whose Russian university builds drones for Russia’s war against Ukraine.

krebsonsecurity.com/2025/12/dr

A screenshot of the website synergy[.]bot, which is part of the DNS infrastructure tied to the Russian education giant Synergy. It shows a black quadcopter drone against a black and green background. UAV Intelligent Control System, reads the headline. The text below says: Small sized integrated system of intelligent control and navigation group actions. Small and Medium-land unmanned. ARMED.

Dear OSS community on Mastodon,

Every day I scroll through my feed and I see proud announcements like:

“First Alpha Relase of HyperTurboWidget available"

or

“Version 2.7.1 now with improved glorb handlers!”

or

“Flux Capacitor version 4.5 is out”

… and I sit there wondering if I should be excited, terrified, or calling a licensed electrician.

Don’t get me wrong, I love open source. I just have no idea what three quarters of these projects actually do. Are we talking about a web server? A file system? A middleware thingy that keeps the flux from overflowing into the space–time continuum?

So, dear OSS developers of the world: When you announce a new release, please give us (your adoring but slightly confused audience) just a tiny bit of context.

  • Tell us what your software does.
  • Tell us why this release is cool.
  • Tell us what it requires to work.

Example:

We are proud to announce Flux Capacitor version 4.5 is now avalaible. While it creates a nice wormhole to 1955, it requires an underlying gigawatt stack 1.21 to work reliably.

Because nobody wants to cheer enthusiastically for “v2.7.1” while secretly Googling “what is a glorb and why does it need handling”.

Yours truly,

Someone who wants to celebrate your achievements

day 8

...Time for some more artificial light, and even one of our projects. This was happening in my early days as a lighting designer, but aside from taking photos and some focusing assistance, I wasn't particularly involved with this design, myself.

It's the Twin Sails Bridge, in Poole. When opening at night, red light floods along the the pedestrian walkways, and highlights the leading edge of each of the opening 'sails'.

More here, if you like: dave-morris.net/Twin-Sails-Bri

A lifting bridge, photographed at night from the pedestrian walkway which crosses it. Set back a little from the opening section, the pathway is flooded with red flight from the handrails, while the road remains washed with white light. The opening portions of the bridge are visible ahead of us, rising into the sky and split diagonally so the two opening sections appear almost like the sails of passing ships. There are even two tall 'masts' at the leading edge of the opening sails.
