the issue is full of social commentary, especially given that it came out in 2017 when was happening, Ninja-G has to deal with both racism and sexism. She starts off in the Honeytrap program but refuses to be sexually touched by men and is moved to the Ninja program because she keeps stabbing dudes.

There's a mention that the only reason MI6 expanded the Ninja program to include women was because the Soviets were including women. The men of the program harass her and accuse her of sleeping her way to the top.

She refuses to kill IRA cells that aren't targeting civilians which makes MI6 mad.

And her handler is a white woman using her (a black woman) skills to get past the glass ceiling. And MI6 considers her handler expendable too despite that.

(cw: blood, death)

2 panels from Ninja-K #4 showing Ninja-G stabbing a white blonde woman. Ninja G says "And with the help of the acclimation bureau she made sure I was always in a proper frame of mind to succeed. the last thing she said to me was: "You stupid bitch! you think you're special? They do it to all of us!"

I blew up her flat. Made it look like the IRA. Had some concern they'd dig deep enough to learn otherwise. But it seems handlers are expendable too."

It really annoys me that we have "display names" and "handles" on social media that are displayed totally inconsistently. There should be a squircle / losenge presentation that includes handle, display name, and maybe profile pic in a few different sizes so that when a person is referenced, it always looks relatively similar

...and you're wasting even more of your life posting about your regrets at the Nazi bar. Still, they probably need to hear it most. Points for partial awakening. Hey, at least you made good money doing it, right?

"I wasted 8 years of my life in crypto"

"Over time however, I felt like I have lost my purpose in crypto. The initial siren songs of crypto’s transformative powers waned after working in the space full-time. I was disillusioned by my target customers and who I was really building for. I completely misunderstood what the actual users of crypto are v.s. just propaganda. Crypto purports that it helps decentralize the financial system, which I completely bought into, but in reality, it’s just a speculation and a gambling hyper-system that’s really just a mirror of what the economy is now."

"The reality hit me like a fucking truck. I am NOT building a new financial system. I built a casino. A casino that does not call itself a casino, but it is the biggest, online, multi-player 24/7 casino our generation has ever concocted. Some part of me wants me to feel proud that I contributed at least my 20s building this casino out. Another part of me literally feels like I wasted my entire 20s in this space. I wasted my life on this, but at least I made good money from it."

Corollary to my previous post:

The more you know about a type system, the more errors you recognize as type errors. Null references, misshapen objects, non-exhaustive conditional logic, subtly incompatible schemas… they’re all common, and they all can be prevented by a type system (as long as you’re holding it right.)

I see JS devs object to TS with arguments like “TS will prevent you from converting a number to a string by accident, but that basically never happens in practice”. And they’re right, but they’re also showing a serious lack of understanding of a type system’s functionality.

Talking about languages is hard, because criticizing something you don’t understand well can easily turn into flaunting one’s ignorance. On the other hand, learning a language well is a huge investment and engineers can’t afford to lear every language which they choose not to use. We constantly have to make technology choices from a place of partial ignorance.

I'm getting a LOT of new followers this weekend and today from mastodon.social that claim to be news aggregators. all created in the past 72 hours. Someone's spinning up a MONSTROUS propaganda/fake news campaign out there right now! I'm guessing it's a state level actor. Be cautious and double-check anything that sounds too good to be true or too outrageous to ignore!

day 8

...Time for some more artificial light, and even one of our projects. This was happening in my early days as a lighting designer, but aside from taking photos and some focusing assistance, I wasn't particularly involved with this design, myself.

It's the Twin Sails Bridge, in Poole. When opening at night, red light floods along the the pedestrian walkways, and highlights the leading edge of each of the opening 'sails'.

More here, if you like: dave-morris.net/Twin-Sails-Bri

A lifting bridge, photographed at night from the pedestrian walkway which crosses it. Set back a little from the opening section, the pathway is flooded with red flight from the handrails, while the road remains washed with white light. The opening portions of the bridge are visible ahead of us, rising into the sky and split diagonally so the two opening sections appear almost like the sails of passing ships. There are even two tall 'masts' at the leading edge of the opening sails.

2025 was one of the most difficult years for press freedom in the U.S. Journalists faced escalating harassment, censorship, legal threats, and violence — and FPF was there every step of the way to do something about it.
