What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Trying to contact company A about making an order. They do not answer their phones. They will not respond to voice mail messages. They do not respond to email.

Trying to contact company B about a in-warranty return. The website customer service "contact us" form, when submitted, the submit button turns light gray and nothing happens. This occurs in both Firefox on Linux and Chrome on Windows. No posted phone number.

Beginning to develop something like "Dead Internet Theory", but for capitalism

Had a play with in live mode from a USB stick on an older laptop tonight just to see if the hardware was supported.

Boy am I out of practice at configuring stuff on the command line! I've become spoilt by GUIs in recent years.

Didn't help with the bug in 15.0 where the WiFi firmware file was incorrectly named and couldn't be loaded for the Intel 8260. Got there eventually, but it seemed to be very slow with iwlwifi. More experimentation required!

This is my face that there doesn't seem to be a Linux tool that will directly delete a login from a single supplementary group, with a usage like a hypothetical 'usermod --del-from-group agrp alogin'. You can entirely replace someone's list of supplementary groups or entirely replace the list of logins for a supplementary group, but not directly remove a single login from a single group without surrounding it with get-and-modify-group-state stuff.

update: oops, missed 'usermod -r ...'

A reminder: when displaying dates and times in apps, do just that. Display dates and times. Don't withhold information have from the user. Don't try to be clever.

Just saw an app tell me that a particular message was sent to me on Wednesday. Which Wednesday? In the time zone I am currently in, it's Wednesday. If the message was sent on Wednesday 3rd December, that is the information you give the user.

Even better, include the time. That way, people can more clearly see intervals and durations.

Bonfire Social looks pretty interesting (via @kissaneErin Kissane) – has anyone had a chance to play with it?

bonfirenetworks.org/app/social/

I like that full data migration is built-in, but I imagine migrating *from Mastodon* might not be? Looks like there's a discussion thread:

i've been playing Sleep literally since the day i was born and i honestly might quit at this point. the fact that you STILL have to buy the godawful CPAP DLC to avoid the constant random "Interrupted Breathing" debuff is such bullshit.

i can deal with nightmares. i can deal with "Woken By Alarm" tanking your mood for two fucking hours. but this is literally unplayable. and i'm not a casual either, i've unlocked both "Sleeps on a Plane" and "Ignoring Partner's Snoring". fix your fucking game
