RE: pdx.social/@hellomiakoda/11570

I was talking about this earlier in the week with @JimmyBJimmyB (he/him), in the circle of people I know irl I'm probably in the top 10% or so for the amount of thought I put into the ethical consequences of my actions (car free, flight free vegan, try to buy secondhand and avoid single use items etc) whereas on Mastodon I'm probably in the bottom 10% (still use Meta and Google products, buy from Amazon, feed my cats meat).

It's not like the "computer industry" did this, that industry was IBM and Siemens and Xerox and Cray. At the start it was all missile targeting systems and concentration camp organizers. A few upstarts happened to notice that miniaturization and cost reduction in industrial process was going to open up new target markets (small office / home office / individual use); the fact that this gave people new capabilities was (from a corporate perspective) an unfortunate, and temporary, side effect

We should, by all means, do our darnedest to reclaim that agency, to use computers to lift up rather than punch down, and we have proof positive that it *is* possible, and we should draw hope from that. But we also need to contextualize that we are not attempting to return to a past; that past was always built on the surface of a soap-bubble; we need to carry the fragments of that past forward into a more durable future and to see every scrap of liberation we manage as a miracle in its own right

I'm trying to shift my perspective from "there was a glorious computer revolution that empowered the user and disrupted authority and we have fallen from the heights of its transcendental grace" and towards the more accurate "my formative years just happened to coincide with a period where a few technical innovations briefly conferred a small amount of power on individuals and labor, and capital has been efficiently reversing that small disruption ever since" but it sure doesn't *feel* like that

Sherrilyn Ifill, president of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, writes that my collaborator and I warned about these eugenicists a few years ago and were called all sorts of names. As she writes, we were "treated as extremists and conspiracy theorists." Even so-called "critics" of large language models came for me unsummoned as I spoke up about this. Marcus and LeCun were on the same side on this one, the side of attacking me for calling out these eugenicists.

there are quite a few reactionaries in my comments, some of which have been defederated in their entirety.

for the others:

1. although the system("which ...") use is silly, that isn't the problem here.

2. what do you think will happen when the code in this PR encounters a process named `" && :() { : | : & }; :&`? will it safely handle such a process name? before saying "that's impossible" please read setprocname(3), setproctitle(3), or in the case of Linux, understand that argv[0] is mutable.

3. yes, it is an open PR. it is also reflective of the code quality of many other PRs which have been merged to Xlibre already. how do you think that impacts its security record?
